My ancestor was Rev Thomas Poyer, rector of Grace Church, Jamaica, Long Island. He died 1731. Married 3 times. Wife #3 was Sarah Oldfield, dau of Richard Oldfield and Jane Thurston. Rev Poyer and Sarah had several children - my ancestor is Sarah Poyer who married Aaron Van Nostrand. Thanks

David,

I'm related through this line. The info I have goes back to 1564. Is there anything I can help you with?

Hello. It seems in reading the Poyer info that most lines seem to trace back to Canada. My POYER ancestor was Rev Thomas Poyer who was born ca 1690 Wales and came to the US in 1710 to Long Island, NY. He spent his life NY, mostly on Long Island. He was married 3 times, once in Wales before he came to the Colonies, then twice here. His last wife was my line, Sarah Oldfield. He died in 1731 and was rector of Grace Church, Jamaica, Long Island. Do you connect to the Canadian POYERs? or the Long Island POYERS?

Although my name is Poyer, is is a mispelling of the Hungarian, Poijer, in 1909 or thereabouts by an immigration official who could not spell properly.

The interesting point is this: several years ago I was contacted by a lady in Wales who wanted to know if I was related to a "John Poyer" who was a soldier and left Wales in the 1500s. Her family legend held that he left his family and went to Hungary as a mercenary to avoid arrest. Unfortunately, she died shortly after she received my reply and there was no further contact with her relatives.

The Hungarian spelling of Poyer, according to my father who spoke fluent Hungarian, may have been "Poijer".

The chances are against it, but this might possibly be another branch of the family. These Hungarian-derived Poyers are also in Michigan (Bellevue-Charlotte-Battle Creek) and in California and Florida.

If you have any information about what happened to "John Poyer", the Welsh soldier in the mid-1500s, it might throw a bit of light on the subject.

I descend thru Thomas Poyer & Sarah Oldfield. Would anyone have documents proving Thomas & Sarah had a son John that married Mary Rhodes. Also would like proof that John & Mary had a son named Joseph Oldfield Poyer.

Do you have any documents showing proof of a marriage between John Poyer & Mary Rhodes? John was the son of Rev Thomas Poyer & wife Sarah.
