both Julian and Julien were poets and high intellectual, and both names are spelled variously -----remember spelling was only formalized in this century....but it is is interesting that one was French (Julian de Lallande Poydras) the other Spanish, but born in the America, but called the "Creole Poydras" because at the time both spanish and french colonists were dubbed as "creole" (i.e. colonists)---of course the word "creole" has taken on so many meanings as to be almost meaningless over the years. I'm reseaching this part also---that the two may have been related even though the families were from different countries---but not very far in distance from each other------hummm!!! Will keep you posted.....Now---will some of the living Poydras' contact me!!!HA-HA!!!! Paul---(Dad) this means you.....we've lost contact---again

yes, we are related---although distantly in some instances. some have used variations on names in an attempt to "americanize" by dropping letters and reworking names, but we are all related.....note that some of the poydras are of direct french descent while others are of dominican and french decent-------this, because of the children born to Poydras during his escape from english prison to what is now the dominican republic/haiti----which was the island of hispanola -----more later

Hi Lauren!
I was especially interested in this post because I also wanted to know the relations between the two Julian/Julien Poydras. When I came across a land transaction by "creole Poydras-Julien", I am speculating he may be related because of the Poydras plantation and Julien owned quite a bit of land in the Pont Coupee area as well. Is it my understanding that Julian never had children because he could not marry because the woman he wanted to marry did not have money? Did he have children anyway? My real question is if you know who Julien's, born in Virginia accroding to a census, parents were? I have heard it was a Bezart female, a family name know well in the area. There were several occasions in the Bezart family where Frenchmen would come from Three Rivers, Quebec to the Point Coupee or Avoyelles parishes to marry creole women. Just curious if you might have heard anything in your travels. Ciao, Carole

I'm sure we are related, but exactly how, I'm not quite sure. I would have to do a bit more research to come up with the exact account of how we are related. When I do, I'll post it here.

Hello,

The descendants of the french Julien Poydras have been extinct I believe. I'm not related to his family, but mu great grd. father Julien BEDEL, was born in 1935 on the ship that brought the son of Julien Poydras ans his family back to La Gasherie. My Great Grd. Father was born from a slave that the De Lalande family owned but did not leave behind, as she were part of the household help. My great Grd. father was brought up at La Gasherie, given an education and was taught to become a jewel maker. He was given a dowry when he married and he established himself in Montgé-En-Goële where he stayed until his death.

Best regards

Jeap

I'm sorry for the delay. I haven't checked the message board in over a year. It's nice to meet you. I have never known about you, but I look forward to getting to know you. I was with your father, brother, and sister in Seattle recently and they are doing well. Keep in touch.

Hello,
Sorry I made a mistake, my grand father was born in 1835 not 1935
