Sorry to take so long to respond Carole. But to answer your question. Yes I have heard of these "marriages" and to my knowledge some of the Poyras' did of course remain, for the most part, in Louisiana, but some did migrate and/or were taken as wife/child "packages" to Quebec, some back to France in some arranged servant/lover/mistress capacity (for the women) and as worker/cheap labor for the male children. I'm still working on how the Bezart clan fits into all this, but something almost equally interesting is how the (additional names-----as if this isn't already too complicated) names Smotherman, McGhee and some German names (which I don't have in front of me at the moment, but will list at another time) fit ito the scheme of things.......also there is a very strong link between, Bedel, Bezart,Poydras, Lafayette, and a few other old French/Creole/Spanish/Dominican names and families......but all very closely associated with Poydras, from the 1740's, really to present....too bad more of the younger kids aren't really interested in where and from whom they came......the history is fascinating to me.....let me hear from you.....and although I am writing this to you Carole, Jean-Pierre Bedel is also invited to write to me as time allows ----I'm posting this publicly for him to see and contact me.

Yours in all probable kinship.....Laurin D. Poydras

Have heard of the Bezart connection and of Poydras' common-law wives along with at least one legally married...but there is some confusion in the spelling of some of these names....after all, spelling was not a fixed matter until recent times. Bezart is sometimes spelled Bexart (with x sounding like z) or vice-versa and other variation often exacerbated by english speakers trying to spell french names phonetically.....will send more as i find it...all the best....LDP p.s. at some point, the Poydras' and the Lafayettes are also related...around Baton Rouge anyway, but i don't think related to the great general...but who knows.

Hi everybody !
My name is Laurent POIDRAS...my ancestor name was Laurent POIDRAS too, born in France about 1589. His son was Jean POITRAS, first arrived in Canada in 1662. I know that Poitras, Poidras, Poydras names are related...it's seems that a first Poitras came from Canada to Louisiana...Who knows more about that ? thanks for your answer.

LAURENT

I am from Pointe Coupee Parish, New Roads, Louisiana. Julien Poydras is an impotrnat historical figure with many land holdings and political clout. He is from Nantes, France. This is a basic history and seems accurate from my knowledge.
