Hi cousins, nices and everybody else.

We are all related!
What I heard when I was in college from one of my history teacher was that, in Haiti was a revolution on 1797 and most of the french colonist left the country with their some of their slaves. Most of them established on the east of the island of Puerto Rico. He told me that probably the last name was Bovadu and developed to Poventud. Remember that the slaves also carry the last name of the owners.

Another version I heard is from Dr. Lopez a respetable
Dr. and historian from Guayama that the first Poventud was Miguel Poventud and came with Captan Ponce de Leon. He told me that is recorded in one Ponce de Leon ships records.

Maybe one of us have to take the real mission and go to the Institute of Culture of Puerto Rico and do a real search.

Well what I now is that most of the family lives in San Juan in the middle of 1800 century.

My father name was Jose Poventud he was born at the end of the 1800. He was the youngest of his family. Born in Carite. His father sold his house that was in calle Ashford and the corner of the Catholic church at the northeast corner. I remember that my father told me when I was very young that his father was looking for some peace or something else (kind of emotional unstable). He took all of his family to live in Carite. My father has alot of brother and sister's. I only got to meet one that used to live in Guamani called Adolfo Poventud. He was white with blue eyes and my father was dark with brown eyes. I recall that he said to me that all his brother and sister's have blue eyes and he was the only one with darker skin and brown eyes. Because Estefania his mother was dark or maybe black. My father was autodidact, that means that he learned to write and read by himself. He told me that by that time, Carite was a very isolated neighborhod and was no school close to where he lives. He took me there when I was little, just the foundation of the house was still there. The house was very close to the river. His father was Manuel Poventud agronomist, married to Estefania Rodriguez . Manuel's father was Jose Poventud that lived in calle Marina San Juan Puerto Rico he was pendolist. His wife was from el Pueblo del Carmen en Guayama last name Rodriguez too. I used to have my father birth certificated that established all that but somebody of my family visit my house and it disapeared. You know who you are. But I forgive you. hahahhahah
One of my father sister's established in Patillas. I know because we used to go there after mass mostly every sunday to visit one of his nieces that married a Mauras.
I was very young at that time and I don't remember much of the names.
When I was born my father was 67 years old and he was a widower. I have a sister from the same marriage that her name is Milagros Poventud and she has a post here.
From his first marriage with Maria Gallardo from Guayama, he has Maria Cecilia, Ventura, Andres, Francisco, Justo, Flora. Also a son that died young but i I don't remember his name , and a daughter that I also don't remember her name. I am 51 year old now and i dont really remember that much anymore . My father's children from his first marriage did not accept my mother because she was a humble and poor woman, 20 years younger than him. But she was the only one that stood as his death bed, cleaning, supporting and comforting him when he was near his death. I think they thought that she was looking for security when she married him. I have very little contact with them. I hope that peace is already in their heart and their decendents.
My father died June 23.1967 he was 80 years old. If you are related to my father because you are decendent of one of his sister and brothers you have part of your geneological tree there. For more you will have to look for church record. My father also told me that his family came from the east of the island that mean Fajardo y Luquillo.
But I think Flora Poventud still is alive and she must have more information. Some of you are close relatives of her and maybe have a close relationship with her and inform us.
My father use to like parties, dance and Ron Barrilito he drunk it once in a while, and carry on a good coversation. Thats why I know those stories. Que Dios los bendiga a todos. I hope what I am telling could help you in your future searches.

I live in Houston, TX
You are welcome to contact me.
Cecilia

Hi my name is Alexandra. I am 17 years old and I think we are related. I am from Puerto Rico and i think my great-grandfather is your half brother. His name is Francisco Poventud Gallardo. He had like 3 sons and a daughter, i think. I'm not sure. My grandfathers name is Jose Miguel Poventud. He had 2 sons and 2 daughters. I would like to know if we are related or not.

You must be related to Jesús Maurás Poventud and Manuel Maurás Poventud. They're both from Patillas, and still alive. Jesús was a school principal until he retired a few decades ago, and Manuel was a police officer; a Colonel I think.
I'm related to them from the Maurás side. They're both cousins of my grandfather.

Hi Cecilia,

We are related. Adolfo Poventud is my great grandfather, his son was my grandfather Miguel Poventud. He was born in Carite. The information you posted is very interesting. My uncle Hector Poventud did some research and we have not been able to track our last name outside of Puerto Rico. Thank you for the information!
