My gt.gt.gt.gt.gt. grandfather was Gavin Pou who was borned
in Scotland.
He had at least two brothers, (George and Robert).
All three brothers came to the the states togeather.
There father was P. Pou and there mother was U. Mureno.
She, it is said, was closly related to the royal family of Italy.
My grandfather married Margaret Mureno who was related to his mother in some way.
If you have heard of these names in your line, I would love to hear from you.

Patricia,

There were certainly 3 brothers

Gavin b. 1700
David b. 1698
George b.1696

All born in Glasgow to Philip Pou and Ursula Mureno

Where the name Pou comes from beats me and Ursula Mureno sounds too exotic for Scotland!

Graeme

Ann, we are related.
You are from Gavin`s son John, I am from Gavin`s son William Sr..
I am not sure about the Name Mureno, have been told that it is not spelled that way.
I am trying to get something from Scotland that gives that information.
I know Phillip Pou, or, De Pou was married to ursila with the same name as Margaret, but can`t find the name Mureno, spelled that way and I beleave that the Pou name was spelled Pow in Scotland, not sure.
Ursila it is said to have been closly related to the royal family of Italy, havent found that out for sure yet because I am not sure that the name was Mureno or was changed here.
Would love to hear from you.
Tryed to e-mail you direct, but e-mail came back,

Hi, I am Carol Pou Olson. I was born in Pensacola FL, grew up in Texas, and now live in New Orleans. I am a member of the family descended from Philip and Ursula Mureno Pou. We have a very interesting family history, don't we!

The Pou name originated in Spain - earliest information is about 1285. Ursula Mureno was supposed to have been related to the Italian Royal family. Philip Pou left Spain for Scotland because of religious beliefs, and in the 1700's he, Ursula and their sons came to the Orangeburg area of South Carolina. The Pou's are all over the south, and supposedly if you have the name, you are related.

Hello Pou Family-I've been doing a bit of research on this family off and on during the last 7 years. I am descended from Gavin Pou who settled in South Carolina in the 1700's. I enjoy reading some of the stories regarding the origins of the family however I cannot find any verifiable proof that the family came from Scotland or any of the other allegations.

For example, I have searched the Church of Scotland baptismal records (these are now on-line) for Gavin Pou/Pow's birth for the relevant period (1650-1750) and beyond and he is not listed in terms of his parents being a Philip/Ursula. There are 2 Gavin Pows that could fit with regards to the time period --but parents have names like Robert and Agnes (Drew)--not Philip or Ursula. I have also done a similar search in the Scottish Catholic baptismal records. In fact, very few PoUs are listed at all in Scottish records. All these records can be accessed at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Of course, it is possible that the baptism is registered with a denomination that is not on-line but the largest number of baptisms in Scotland are Church of Scotland records.

I understand that the reference for Gavin Pou being Scottish comes from A History of Orangeburg County, SC. However, I cannot find any other record to substantiate this or the other claims regarding the names of Ursula Mureno, Philip Pou, Spanish, Italian, or other ancestry.

I do agree that the name Pou as it is being spelled here is Spanish. It is still common in the Catalan area.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with verifiable records to substantiate any of the claims on the message board.

Many thanks!!

Melinda
