HI there,
I came across your post. I am also descended from Gavin Pou (through his son Robert, who married Ann Wolfe). Gavin is my 7th great grandfather.
I have been very confused by the supposed Spanish/Italian connection. As Gavin was active in the early politics of Orangeburg, SC, there are some records about Gavin and two brothers coming over around 1740 from Scotland. His last name is sometimes listed as Powe (Scottish), namely in his immigration record of 1740. Anyway, I suspect he was born to Scottish parents (Robert and Agnes most likely, if you look at Scottish baptismal records). Maybe the decision to change it to Pou (in his generation, or the next) -- which is a Catalan name -- is where the confusion lies, and where the supposed Spanish connection began. I was wondering if you had any more info about his early life to support or dispute this.
Any info you have would be much appreciated.
Thanks! Foy
