Hello,
For more information and pictures of the Nathan Allen Pou line of the Pou family, you may go to the downtown Dallas Public Library and find the Pou family history book called John Pou III and his Descendants by Dr. Ida Mae Pou Heard.
My grandfather Nathaniel Allen Pou was named for his uncle Nathan Allen Pou. My great grandfather was William Tell Pou. If you would like to be added to our reunion list, we have our reunions in Carthage, Texas at the Texas Tea Room on the square.
You will enjoy seeing family pictures of the Nathan Allen Pou line.

Hello Pou Family-I've been doing a bit of research on this family off and on during the last 7 years. I am descended from Gavin Pou who settled in South Carolina in the 1700's. I enjoy reading some of the stories regarding the origins of the family however I cannot find any verifiable proof that the family came from Scotland or any of the other allegations.

For example, I have searched the Church of Scotland baptismal records (these are now on-line) for Gavin Pou/Pow's birth for the relevant period (1650-1750) and beyond and he is not listed in terms of his parents being a Philip/Ursula. There are 2 Gavin Pows that could fit with regards to the time period --but parents have names like Robert and Agnes (Drew)--not Philip or Ursula. I have also done a similar search in the Scottish Catholic baptismal records. In fact, very few PoUs are listed at all in Scottish records. All these records can be accessed at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Of course, it is possible that the baptism is registered with a denomination that is not on-line but the largest number of baptisms in Scotland are Church of Scotland records.

I understand that the reference for Gavin Pou being Scottish comes from A History of Orangeburg County, SC. However, I cannot find any other record to substantiate this or the other claims regarding the names of Ursula Mureno, Philip Pou, Spanish, Italian, or other ancestry.

I do agree that the name Pou as it is being spelled here is Spanish. It is still common in the Catalan area.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with verifiable records to substantiate any of the claims on the message board.

Many thanks!!

Melinda

Gavin Pou, son of Phillip Pou and Ursula Mureno fled from Scotland to Orangeburg District, South Carolina in 1740 for political reasons. Gavin married Lady Margaret Mureno, an Italian noblewoman related to the royal family of Italy. She was probably a relative of Ursula. They had eight children. My great-great grandfather John Pou III was one of those children. John Pou III and his second wife Mary Ann Durham Pou moved with their young family to Panola County, Texas in 1855. A history of the Pou family is in Dr. Ida Mae Pou Heard's book "John Pou III and his Descendants" published in 1988. It is available at the Dallas Public Library genealogical section and is probably the "black book" referred to. There is a copy of the book in the Marshall, TX courthouse historical library. We have our Pou Family Reunion in even numbered years in East Texas. Our next reunion will be in April, 2012 at Ramah Baptist Church in Tenaha, Texas.
I will be happy to answer any questions I can at fheugatter@yahoo.com.

Hi Melinda,
The Pou family originated in Spain but became citizens of France. The name was originally de Pou or de Pow. The Pous were French Huguenots who fled to the British Isles during 1565-1700. The name Pou means "a well." The family coat of arms pictures a silver well.

My father ( Bertram Eric Lawrence) whose mother was Mary Easter Pou. She was the sister of Ollie Pou. I often heard my dad talk about his aunt Ollie. She is buried at Herbon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Waynesboro, MS. I am trying to find out about my side of the Pou family and would appreciate any help you could give me. If I can be of help let me know

A fun story and parts are probably correct, but erroneous in the details. Mary Elizabeth was born in Texas (Red River County), and her family moved to Panola County by 1870. She married Nathan in 1874, in Kaufman County, Texas. She and Nathan lived in Panola County for some time, but by 1880 they were living in Kaufman County, where she died, in 1889, 15 years after they were married.

Nathan's family was in Alabama, where he was born, in 1850, but by 1860, they were in Panola County, Texas.

So my guess is that they were both in Panola County when they met. If they traveled by covered wagon, it wasn't a lengthy trip.
