Could you suggest any leads for research on Jacques (James) PORTEOUS of Quebec?
Based on the age in the Canada census, he was born around 1817 or 1818.
He married Louise SCHEFFER (written Chefford in the parish marriage record) at St. Scholastique, Quebec in 1841.
He was living with his wife and four daughters in St. Adele, Terrebonne, Quebec in 1861.
He died (probably somewhere in Quebec) sometime between the 1861 and 1871 census there.
After his death (and sometime after the 1871 Canada census), his widow Louise (1818 Quebec -1894 USA) and at least one daughter (Caroline, 1844 St. Scholastique - 1938 USA) both immigrated to Montana USA. Both are buried in the Frenchtown, Missoula, Co., Montana cemetery. The grave marker for Louise says “widow of James."
Any suggestions on finding out more about my James Porteous and his ancestors?
There was another James Porteous (a Montreal postmaster, who died in 1853, a grandson of James Porteous (1741 Scotland-1782 Montreal)) while my James Porteous was still living in Montreal with his wife and daughters in 1861.
My Jacques Porteous was Catholic while the postmaster James Porteous was Protestant. I am not sure about any connection between my Jacques (James) Porteous and the Porteous family from Scotland.
