The earliest records (deeds, wills, marriages, court orders, court minutes) of Southampton County Virginia are being indexed by volunteers and being made freely available on the Web for public use under the auspices of the Brantley Family Association. Along with these indexes (in PDF format) are the images of pages of the original record books. This is the first effort to digitize, index, and provide to the public a significant portion of the records of an entire county. I hope that many more counties will follow suit.

For links to indexes and galleries of digital images see:

http://www.brantleyassociation.com/southampton_project/south...

Good luck in your Pope Search!

Charles Walker

My connection to this county is through my great-great-grandparents Cordy Pope and his wife Jane Bailey.

Hi Charles,
Thank you for the quick reply!
I did look through those images- they are taken with a hand held camera, and they are not scanned images....making it impossible to read the original pages. Had they taken photocopies, and then used a scanner, they could have produced some legible results.
Kind regards,

Hi Steven,

I'm sorry you're having trouble reading the images of the Southampton Co VA records. Yes, they are made with a digital camera but not one which was handheld. A custom-built two-camera mounted system was used. This was conceived as an alternative to microfilming, which takes much longer and is not as easy to copy.

The trouble you are having reading the images may be due to the browser you are using. I can read the images easily with Firefox. Here's what I do:

(1) Using Firefox, go to the page that has the links to the indexes and the galleries of images:
http://www.brantleyassociation.com/southampton_project/south...

(2) Click on a link for the gallery for one of the books. For example, Will Book 5 1797 - 1804

(3) A page of thumbnail images will open, one for each page in the book. There will be several pages of these thumbnails and you can go from one page of them to another by clicking on the numbers following the words "Go to Page" at the top of the window.

(4) Click on one of the thumbnails. For example, Pg 003.

(5) In the window that opens, you will see these words in the upper left corner: "Click here to open image in new window."

(6) Hover over the new image with your cursor, which will change from an arrow to a magnifying glass.

(7) Click on the image and it will magnify large enough to read. Click again and it will return to the original size. Old handwriting may be difficult to decipher at first. Some of the pages are not in as good condition as others.

(8) If you wish to save this image to your computer, RIGHT click on the image.

(9) Choose "Save image as" from the pop-up menu that appears.

(10) Save the image to a convenient folder.

(11) You can then open it with some other program that can be used to view and magnify images.

(12) Be sure to save only the images that you open in the new window. These are the best ones. The other ones cannot be enlarged without losing detail.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it works for you.

Charles

Hello Charles,
Thank you so much for all the detailed info about how to better see the pages, so much appreciated. What an outstanding job they did to make the Index, really Great.
It is so inspiring to see how wonderful the penmanship was back then-so refined and distinguished. Such a sense of pride in their work.
I have searched the records, and concluded I will have to "hire an expert" to find out links before 1777 for this part of the family. With such a strong family history I thought I could find the history of all of the Popes, but think that it might include a divorce/change of name and re-marry as the reason for the cloak of secrecy...? It was during the time of many southern home getting burned down and loosing their family histories.
Kind regards,
Steven Stacy

Hi, Steven,

Based on a comparison of page numbers in the online index of the earliest marriage records of Southampton Co VA, there doesn't seem to be a page that contains the names of both Nathan Pope and Nancy Stephenson, so they may not have married in that county. However, I did not check for Ann Stephenson, for which Nancy is a nickname. You might want to try that.

I did notice in the online image of the will of Patience Pope, dated 3 Nov 1777 (Southampton Co Will Book 3, p. 264) that she had a son named Nathan Pope. Your Nathan would have been about 6 months old at that time.

There are many references in the various indexes for Nathan Pope. I remember seeing this name when I was doing some of the indexing work myself. It is likely that there are several different men with this name.

Nevertheless, I think it would be worthwhile if you would like to make abstracts of all the wills that make a reference to a Nathan Pope.

Your Nathan Pope's will is in Will Book 13, page 141. One of the witnesses is Henry Pope, a possible relative (brother?).

It might also be helpful to see what other Popes are on the same page as a particular individual. The index can provide this information very quickly. For example, below are the Popes in the index to Will Book 13. There are many Popes on page 141, which indicates that they may be related. In contrast, my Cordy Pope is also in this index, but there is no other Pope on the same page (385), so I am not likely to find any other Pope relatives from the information on that page.

Re a note I found a couple of years ago. You may want to check for Nancy Barrett, which was her 1st husbands name.

I have just come across your queries dating from 2000 on RootsWeb.
I don't know if any of you are concerned with the Nathan Pope line of Southampton Co., VA, but here's my little contribution:
Nathan Pope married Nancy Barrett, nee Stephenson.  Her first husband was Elias Barrett of Southampton Co., VA, a son of Jesse Barrett.  They were married very young and had one child together, Richard  Barrett. Elias died around 1814-1817, leaving Nancy with an infant.  There were suits filed in Chancery Court in Southampton County over Elias' small estate.  Apparently, the Barretts did not want Nancy or Richard to receive any lands to which Richard might have been entitled.  The estate was eventually divided with Nancy receiving her one-third in dower; the rest going to her son, Richard.  I have documentation that supports all of this.  I also have a copy of a tax record showing where Amos Stephenson (Nancy's father) gave her land.  I also have documentation (Amos Stephenson's will) showing where he left land to Richard Barrett with Nancy as guardian.  So, if anyone is curious about the Richard Barrett in Nathan Pope's household, he is my 3rd ggf.
I'll be happy to provide what documentation I have if anyone wishes a copy.

Hello Betty Barrett Chandler,
Great to hear from you and
thank you for your information, you show your articulate skills in your response. I have been lucky to connect to sharp minds in my quest to go back in time.
It did pop up a few months ago and I did research her name as Barrett- and still hit the wall as to a connection, but
your other info of her previous marriage will certainly help- thank you!
I am just another ancestry squirrel digging for nuts to leave behind.....!
Thank you for your input, I need it.
Kind regards,

Charles,
Years ago my wife and I visited the Southampton County court house looking for information about her Crutchlow line. On one of these many trips she found, and wrote in her ring binder, these words (or something similar): "Miles Pope went to the court house and announced that Richard Crutchlow died in 1855 and his father was named William." Unfortunately she did not write down the book and page number. I have been through all the indixes on the Southampton County digital images web site and cannot find this information under the name Miles Pope. Could this be in a book you have not digitized? I realize this is an off the wall question but it is the only reference we have EVER found naming Richard Crutchlow's father.

Fred,

Yes, the Pope-Crutchlow reference could be in one of the books that are still being indexed. Another possibility, based on the wording, is that it may have come from a Chancery Court record. These weren't included in the indexing project, but the project director, Ken Brantley, says that it might be useful to digitize and index them, too, even though a lot of the information might be duplicated. Guess we'll have to see how that works out.

I'll let you know if I run across a Pope-Crutchlow association in the records.

Good Luck!
