Hello Robert,
I have quite a bit of info on the POPAY/POPEY name in Norfolk, and trace back to
a James POPAY who was born at Ashmanhaugh in 1763. He was a doctor who married
and lived the rest of his life in Buckinghamshire.
There is now a lot of information on this surname on the internet...part of the
records being compiled by 'Geoff' and another person, together with a team of transcribers.
I expect you will have the URL for this.
If you like to tell me more details of your line, perhaps I can help, or even put you
in touch with other POPAY researchers. I know of at least 3 others.
Nancy.

Bob,
The best URL is this :
http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/index.php3

It is a collection of 'all & every' surname from mainly church registers in the county of Norfolk. And the parishes where the Popays lived seem to be rather well covered.
I had hoped to be able to reply to you personally, but there doesn't seem to be any facility on this site, giving me your e-mail address....Or is it that I am blind?
Anyway, I hope this helps, and if I could have/find your e-mail address, I shall check out my Winterton lot, and let you have the details.

Hello Bob,

I'm doing research on an infamous Popay I believe is your Great Grandmother's Brother, William Steward Popay, b18/2/1797, who became a Sergeant in the Met Police in 1831 and then became exposed as an undercover agent in an early chartist group known as the National Political Union - questions asked in the House and an unfortunate end to him, being dismissed from the force in 1833. Would you know if this is the same branch of the family? I have copies of the original police records if you are interested.
