CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There will be services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hubbard for Selma H. Popa, 88, formerly of Hubbard, Ohio (Mahoning County) who passed away Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, in Charlotte, N.C.
Selma was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Farrell, Pa., a daughter of Mathias and Regina Linsing Holmes, and was a lifelong area resident before moving to Charlotte to be near her daughter in January 2011.
During World War II, Selma worked at the Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Sharon, Pa., as a secretary to the superintendent of Quality Control; later she worked at the Hubbard, Ohio Public Library as the clerk/treasurer for one year.
Selma worked as an office manager for 40 years for several local physicians: Dr. Bernard Schneider for 15 years and for Dr. J. Hong and Dr. Danny Chung for 25 years before her retirement in 1999. She also was a member of Mahoning County Medical Assistance.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Hubbard, Ohio where she was a former church council member.
Her first husband, John Popa Jr., whom she married Feb. 14, 1945, passed away Jan. 9, 1962; her second husband, Ira Carl Appel, whom she married July 19, 1999, passed away Feb. 20, 2010.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter Janice (John) Vojtko of Charlotte, N.C.; her grandchildren, Robert Vojtko of Charlotte, Suzanne (Anthony) Morehouse of Queensbury, N.Y., John Michael Popa of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Kacee Popa of Sea Island, Ga.; her brother, Henry Holmes of Farrell, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, John Popa Jr., who died in an automobile accident, and Ira Carl Appel; her son, John M. Popa, who died in a plane crash; her sister, Sue Theil; and her brother, Walter Holmes.
There will be calling hours on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home and Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church.
Burial will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.
