William Pook married Elizabeth ? and their children were George (Abt. 1835) and Elizabeth (Abt.1839). If any of this rings a bell, let me know!
Thanks!

From my database of Pook marriages the family you are looking for are obviously William Pook and Mary Thorne, married circa 1787 at Pinhoe, Devon.

The children they had were John, 2 Sep 1787, Ann, 28 Jun 1789, Mary, 11 May 1791( who married James Southwood, c1823), Rebecca, 7 Apr 1793, Sarah, 30 Aug 1795, Jane, 29 Jan 1798, William, 5 Oct 1800 and Thomas, 24 Nov 1805. Sarah had baseborn son John, 6 Jan 1820. These are all baptism dates and were all at Heavitree.

Both Ann and her sister mary Southwood were at Starcross District Courtenay Arms, Kenton in the 1951 census (ref. HO/107/1867/615/25).

The William and Elizabeth plus their children you mention are listed also in the census and I suspect he gave his age wrongly as he was younger than his wife.

All the dates I have given are from the IGI, which are copies of parish register baptisms. I hope this is useful for you but I have no more info about them as I am not related to them.

Regards from Terry Pook, Southampton.

Dear Kevin,
I am no relation to the Pook family you are researching but my database, taken from the IGI and the 1851 census shows Richard Pook and Elizabeth Babb as the parents of Nicholas, born at Culmstock on the 23rd Aug 1812 and baptised on the same day along with four of his five brothers, he being the last child born. The other four brothers all married and I could supply the names if you would like them.

Nicholas married Rebecca Cross at Culmstock on 28th March 1827 and was an agricultural labourer in 1851. The dates shown on the IGI would seem to need checking as it appears that Nicholas was only 14 when he married, which seems hard to believe. Their ages as shown on the census were 45 for Nicholas and 53 for Rebecca. The census reference is HO/107/1921/680/18 if you wish to check it out.

Mary was their first child born in 1827, baptised 30th Sep, then Alfred, baptised 21st Feb 1830, then Shadrack, baptised 8th Sep 1833 and lastly Rebecca, born circa 1839 but I have her listed as marrying James Broddick on 30th Mar 1860. Alfred married Ann Karslake at Bristol in 1856 and had a family of six children all living at Bedminster, Bristol in 1881. Shadrack married Jane
Gollop in 1876, had a son Arthur and lived at Dawlish in 1881.

I hope this will help you continue with further research and will you please correct me if you find any errors in my information. I would like to know of any family that Rebecca had with James so that I can add it to my data.

Regards, Terry.

Hi Terry

I am researching this line. After looking at the transcription of the Culmstock Parish Register, Nicholas was born 12 Aug 1806 (baptised with brothers 23 Aug 1812), which agrees with the age of 45 in the 1851 UK census correct.

If you want the details of Rebecca & James family, I can look that up for you (as I live in New Zealand). Let me know.

Have you come across any suggestions as to the parents of Richard (Nicholas' father) in your research travels?

Cheers,
Fiona
