Re: Pook's in New Zealand
Hi Bruce
My Grandmother was the daughter of Gertrude Margaretta and Edward (Ted) Pook. Her name was Maria Gertrude. I wasn't aware that your grandmother Miriam was also a sibling. Do you any have family records I could reference as I haven't come across any which include Miriam.
Cheers

Re: Pook's in New Zealand
Hi Terry and Neroli,
Sorry I haven’t replied until now. Miriam Edna Pook was born in Dargaville in either 1912 or 1913. She died on 19 Jan 1939 in Taumaurunui. Her youngest child is my mum who was born just 5 months before Miriam died. She married Frederick Excell on 3 April 1933.
I said in my earlier post that Miriam was the youngest child of Gertrude and Edward Pook. However after speaking with my mother I have since learnt that the youngest was John Anthony Pook. The details I have of her siblings are as follows….(I think the details are correct…but if there are any inaccuracies I would be happy to be corrected.)
Maria Gertrude Pook May 29 1903 Edward James Pook Feb 9 1905 – March 9 1991 Kathleen Ellen Pook 1906 -- Jan 26 1975 Richard Alfred Pook 1908 George Clement Pook April 22 1910—1994 John Anthony Pook 1914 April 10 1945
I have some other details....copies of newspaper items etc (assuming that you may not already have them... if you are intersted)

Re: Pook's in New Zealand
Im a grand-daughter of Clem (George Clements Pook) from the first marriage. Clem was a son of Ted Pook and Gertrude Green.(Clements comes from his grandmother Fanny Emily Clements who with her husband Alfred Richard Pook arrived in Auckland on 22nd June 1874 on the sailing ship Loch Awe having made the trip in record time). Alfred and Fanny came to NZ for him to take up a job at Nicholsons Mill in Topuni but I cant find much about him. He and Fanny are buried in the cemetary of Rosebank/Orchards Rds in Avondale. Gorgeous headstone if anyone hasn't seen it. I have not seen a copy of All The Rivers Run but there is another book with Pook history in it. Called "Seven Lives On Salt River" it is out of print now but some libraries have it. Also a childrens book called Salt River by Elizabeth Hegarty tells the story of the children of the second marriage. Clem died in 2004 in Birkenhead, Auckland, aged 94 years. He and his wife Hazel had parented 10 children. John Pook (Clems brother) is buried in the RSA section at Helensville Cemetery.

Re: Pook's in New Zealand
Hi Bruce
This is really interesting information. Ted was with Kohi at Pahi by the time your Grandmother was born. Ted and Kohi had at least one child of their own by this date. However, I guess this is not to say that he wasn't also visiting both houses?? Ted and Gertrude divorced in 1930 and Ted and Kohi married in 1931. Gertrude remarried in 1932 to Alfred Harper and they lived in Auckland. I don't have alot of information about the family as my grandmother, Maria, didn't have much to do with her family in my Dad's lifetime or pass on much information. Dad recalls some things but he wasn't born till 1938 and was the second youngest of 10 children. My grandfather died in 1940 whilst Nana was pregnant with the 10th child. She had a pretty tough life bringing up her family on her own and she never remarried. There is plenty of written information about Ted and Kohi's family but not so much about Gertrude and their children. I understand the the 2 families were kept very seperate and Nana didn't indicate that she knew her half siblings. It must have been difficult for Gertrude to live so close to Ted and Kohi in a smalll community. I would love to see any newspaper items etc you have. I live in Hamilton and my Dad also lives near me. Any information I have on the family is on my family tree page and I hope that is of help to you.
Kind regards
Neroli

Re: Pook's in New Zealand
Hi I am the Granddaughter of Edward James Pook (1905-1991) and Great-Granddaughter of Edward James and Gertrude. My mother, Joan Maria is Edward James and Emily Queenie Pook's eldest daughter.
Mum talks about her Uncle John. Apparently, he was 6ft7". He was the youngest of the first Pook family. On the way back from the war, he went swimming in a cannel and indigested some sort of worm. He was hospitalised in NZ. Mum said the beds were too short for him so they had to put another sideways at the end.
As far as I know, out of all the Pooks (Maori and European) he is the only one who died.

Re: Pook's in New Zealand
Hi Lianne
My Grandfather Edward (Ted) and yours were quite close.
My mum talks about the holidays they had in Helensville with Uncle Clem and Aunty Hazel's family. I have also met Clem and Hazel (when I was younger). Out of all Grandad's siblings, Clem was the only one I met.
Mum is close to one of Clems daughters, Irene.
Yes the book is called Seven lives on Salt River. There is also a book called, Images for Albertland. GGDad was the "King of the Kaipara". He was also a tour guide for visitors etc and took the PM on fishing trips!!!!

Re: Pook's in New Zealand
Hi I am researching the Pook family of The Kaipara, New Zealand for a newspaper article. Edward James Pook features in a chapter in the book Seven Lives on Salt River by Dick Scott published by Hodder and Stoughton, Southern Cross Books, Auckland New Zealand in 1987.ISBN 0 340 410183 The chapter about the family (Edward's second) is titled No Picnic at Puriiri Point. This story also gives detail about Tom, the eldest son, his childhood and his adult life as a sailor.
Tom's story also appears in novel form in Salt River by Elizabeth Hegarty, published by Scholastic for young readers aged 10-13. The author received a prize for his book at a recent New Zealnd book festival.
