There is a de Pombo family in Colombia. I have heard that the name Pombo means "Dove" in galego languaje, and that is also a place. That is why Colombian Pombos are de Pombo (from Pombo).

I was just going through my family history with my father and he told me the original last name was "De Pombo" but at some point the Spanish government allowed the removal of the "De" because it made last names confusing when it came to marriages, for example one of my ancestors from the early 1700s was named "Juan De Pombo y Doldan" and married "Petrona De Pombo y Ante" which would of made her name "Petrona De Pombo De Pombo" There for the later generation removed the "De" and just kept the Pombo.

BTW: Does anyone know how to access records from Spain? This website doesn't have many of them and I would like to know who were the original people to travel to Colombia.

Thanks!
