Pombo is a portuguese / galician word meaning "pigeon". There are logically several families with the same name, all of them of Portuguese/galician origin.
The best known and oldest of these is from galicia, where there are records
of members from the family since early 11th. century. The
legend has it that in the famous (and probably legendary)
battle of alarcos,in the 9th. century, the Sire of
Pombo carried te royal banner.
The pombo family has established itself in many places in the world. In
Colombia, in Argentina, In the USA, but the best known branch
set up a family in the town of Sahagun, in present day Palencia, in Spain in the 17th. century.
From there, at the beginning of the 1800's the
family estalished an network of interests in all northern Spain, with
brother setting up their families and commercial intereests
in Santander (Juan Pombo, later marquess of Casa Pombo), Valladolid, Palencia and sahagun itself.
By the mid 1800 the Pombo Brothers were the largest taxpayers in Northern Spain and the biggest
producers and exporters of flour, especially to USA and Cuba.
If you think you are related somehow to this family, please, e-mail me, as I have an extensive database comprising all the descendants of Juan Pombo and many other related persons (more than 10.000)

Thanks for the information. You sound quite versed in genealogy, I'm quite a novice. I'll put this in my family records.

Nice to find that information on the web.My father, Tomas, was born in Triacastela, near Lugo, Spain, and travel with his parents, Mariano Pombo and Virtudes Fernandez to Chile, about 1922. He told me he had uncles at Spain, Philippines, and maybe Colombia, Cuba and Florida. If anyone knows about our ancestors, please email me.

Dear Manuel Pombo,

I am writing to you because I think I am related to the Pombo family from Santander.
My name is Carmen María Fernández Pombo and I live in A Couña in Galicia, Spain. My grandfather always said that his ancestors came from that city in Spain.
My great great grandfather was Timoteo Pombo Campelo, who was a journalist and deserted his wife Carolina Bello Vázquez. He was said to travel to some place in South America but nobody knows where. His son Emilio Pombo Bello was my great grandfather and was a businessman and town councillor of A Coruña during the "Primera República" =First Republic .His son Francisco Pombo Mantiñán was my grandfather, but my grandaunt Sofía was the person who told me the story of my family and gave me pictures of Timoteo, Carolina and Emilio. She also gave some objects that belonged to Emilio Pombo.
My brother Manuel is so fond of Pombo surname that he has legally changed his name to Manuel Pombo.
If you had some information about our ancestors I would really appreciate it so much.

Thank you !

My Great Grandmother was born in Galicia (La Coruña). She was Josefa Pombo. She was born in 1901 and migrated to Cuba in approximatly 1915. She had a sister that went to Argentina. However, some of her family remained in Spain, and perhaps we are related. Her sister was Pura, and Maria. Please contact me if you know about this.

Dear Dan,

I am sorry to tell you that Idon't know anyone in my family called Josefa, Pura or María.My grandfather Francisco Pombo was born in 1900 and his brothers and sisters remained in Spain. The only Pombo who went to America was his grandfather Timoteo Pombo Campelo, and this happened in the 19th century.
