I am looking for any information on the surname Poje. I was always told that our family named was changed or "Americanized" as so many immigrants did. My memory on the spelling might be wrong.

I was told that my ancestors were of Austrian descent. However, when an elderly uncle passed away, we learned his place of birth was Yugoslavia.

My grandmother and granfather lived in Russell, PA. in the early 1900's and later settled in Buffalo, NY. My grandfater's name was Carl (Karl) and was married to Sophia Weitrich (sp)
I don't know if they had any other relatives in this country.

Mainly, I am interested in learning the country of origin of the name Poji. Appreciate any info.

Unfortunately my information is just as scarce. So far all I have traced is my grandparents surnames; Poje and Wittreich and the possibility that these families could have come from the villages of Morobitz or Klindorf.

My great grandmother was Jennie Poje, from Slovenia (former Yugoslavia). I'm sure you are way past this point in your research by now, but most Poje surnames tend to be from Slovenia.
