Re: Origin of the name Poji?
Thanks. It did take some time and a lesson in the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to figure it out. I was confused because my grandparents were listed as Austrians and my uncle as Yugoslavian. According to Ellis Island they were from Obergras which is now Trava, Slovenia.

Re: Origin of the name Poji?
Hello My name is Adriana Poje. My father Dragutin Poje was born in Slavonski Brod, Yugoslavia, now Croatia. We just did a whole lineage tracing back the roots of the surname Poje. I will get the information in a few short weeks. Just wanted to let you know that my family comes from that area in Yugoslavia! Hope that helps

Re: Origin of the name Poji?
I did learn in a Slovenian class at Cleveland State University in about 1976 that Poje is a form of the verb Pojati (not sure of spelling) which is "To Sing".
My mother remembered seeing in the slovenian paper (in Cleveland Ohio)it was always saying Poje this and Poje that when the paper discussed the choirs singing around town and she thought if funny to have her name there. I am a Grandchild of Jacob and Mary Poje from Cleveland Ohio, Collinwood area.

Re: Origin of the name Poji?
My family name is Poyer. It was changed from Poje when my grandfather came to america from Yugoslavia now known as Slovenia. From all that I have researched it is a slovenian name. My family came from Vrhnika Slovenia. My grandfather was Andrew and his sister Mary and brother Anthony also came to america.

Re: Origin of the name Poji?
From what I have heard it is a relatively common name, at least in the Cleveland Ohio area. I once went to a Pet Cemetery near Richmond Heights and found a grave for a "Rocky Poje", someone's pet!
