To assist with the
Poindexter Y-DNA Project, you need to be a direct male descendant from a
Poindexter family line or a line of one of the variant spellings of this surname. Ladies, you are welcome to enlist your husbands, if they are the descendant, fathers, sons, cousins, uncles and so on. You can also join the project if you are a direct female to female to female line to a female
Poindexter ancestor. The mtDNA tests are also on sale.
We recommend doing at least the 37 marker Y-DNA to truly define the
Poindexter family branch from which you descend. The top two bargains are the Y-DNA37+mtDNAplus and the Y-DNA67mtDNAplus. This will provide your immediate family with both the
Poindexter line going back and your mother's line also going back to her mother, grandmother, etc.
If you are a female, the only DNA test you can do is the mtDNAplus. However, you can save money if you have a brother who is willing to do either the 37 marker or 67 marker Y-DNA test +mtDNAplus.
Men carry both the Y and X chromosomes, therefore your brother can get results for both your male direct line and your mother's female direct line through the combined tests. It costs less than just you doing the mtDNA testing and him doing just the Y-DNA testing. The information you will receive will be the same. To sweeten the pot for your brother, offer to pay for the difference between his 37 or 67 marker test to upgrade it with one that includes the +mtDNAplus. This makes it a win-win situation for everyone.
For a more indepth explanation of both Y-DNA results and mtDNA results go to
http://www.familytreedna.com/If you are the researcher, but not a direct male or female descendant, you can help to encourage the relative who you find to be the donor by offering to share the cost of the testing. Only one male in a family needs to be tested because all male siblings most likely have exactly the same DNA. With this in mind, maybe a family with several siblings would all chip in to have one of the gentlemen in the family tested. The older the generation being tested the better, but this certainly is not a deal breaker if that individual is not into this "new fangled" technology.
