Edith Pohley, 102, formerly of Turkeytown, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg. She was born Nov. 15, 1910, at a home in "Poverty Hollow" near Madison. She was a granddaughter of the late Joseph and Christine (Christian) Brandenburg, of Switzerland," and a daughter of the late Stephen and Elizabeth Marie (Brandenburg) Pohley, of Austria. She was the third-born of a close-knit family of five sisters, Emma Bellan, Elizabeth Ometz, Bertha Marsh and Mabel Pohley, the eldest of whom was born to Stephen's first wife. She had two brothers, Joseph and Frederick Pohley. All of whom are deceased. Edith attended Geneva College for a teaching credential. She paid her tuition by performing housekeeping duties for the college president and his family. She was also able to reside there. After graduating from Geneva College, she taught for 46 years in schools in South Huntingdon Township/Yough School District. Edith was a member of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, trustee, elder and clerk of session. She also served on the Johnston Home Board of Governors, served on Greensburg Home on The Auxiliary Board and as a volunteer. After retiring, she served as a volunteer at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg. Edith was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association. She is survived by nieces and nephews and other cherished relatives and friends. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., 901 Vine St., West Newton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Eric N. Glisan officiating. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
