Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Hello there
I can probably help a little, I'm a Pohler from London. My Grandfather was Frederick William and I think his father was Ernest Gotthard. My brother and I began a tentative dig-around several years ago but we only got so far. I'll double check and come back to you.
Cheers Stuart

Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Dear Stuart, I wonder whether you had any luck on the Poehler family in Islington. Gotthard was my great great grandfather on my mother's side. My grandmother was Gladys Emily Alice, born 1906 the daughter of Alice Poehler, who was the daughter of Gotthard and Emily Poehler. I know that Gotthard was a furrier. With best wishes, Cathy

Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Cathy - sorry for not coming back to you sooner, I will need to confirm birth certificate/other details with my mother on her return from holiday but the Gotthard/ Islington link is certain. Phil - interesting information, I had some communication with Richard (your cousin in Aberdeen?) several years ago about our respective lineages and put all I knew down in email; alas I didn't keep hold of our dialogue. My grandfather, Frederick William, was born in Islington and the Elmore Street address (shown here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kingsman/k...) certainly rings a bell. He married Freda (maiden name tbc) and moved to Letworth, Hertfordshire where they had a son/my father, Derrick. Derrick married my mother, Pauline (nee Churchill) in Harrow, Middlesex and had 4 children; Garry (b.1957 d.1993), Karen (b.1960 now Karen Partridge), Andrew (b.1967) and me (b.1974). I have two daughters, Elizabeth (b.2008) and Felicity (b.2010). The aforementioned evidence (albeit not comprehensively researched!) would suggest that my brother, my daughters and I constitute the UK's Pohler population south of the border. I hope to fill in some of the gaps around the period in question shortly. Best Wishes Stuart

Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Hi Cathy/Phil
Thought I'd strike whilst the iron was hot...
My great-great-Grandfather Gotthard Pohler was born in 1883 in Germany but the 1871 census shows him living in St John Road, Shoreditch, London aged 38. By the age of 58 (1891 census) he had moved to Elmore Street, Islington, and was a furrier.
My great Grandfather Ernest was born in 1863 in Elmore Street and later married Julia (b. 1865, unsure of maiden name). My grandfather, Frederick Pohler was b.1895 in Elmore Street. His siblings were Florence (b.1894), Ernest (Jnr, b.1897) Gladys (b.1899), Emily (b.1901), Ada (b.1905), and Hilda b.(1907). At some point the family then moved to Willesden
So, Cathy - names that correspond with your original enquiry are Ada, Emily and Ernest.
Hope this helps
Stuart

Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Cathy
Please excuse yet another response from me today, my two and four year old daughters put pay to a single succinct reply this morning!
Having re-read your follow up message, it's clear that we share the same great great Grandfather, which is quite something. Having subsequently 'googled' Gotthard, I see from another forum that you know he is originally from Werden, Saxony, which I didn't. I would be fascinated to know if you have any further info on the German history? Also your own - are you in the UK or the other side of the 'pond'?
And Phil - great to converse with the far larger Scottish contingent!
Best Stuart

Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Hi Cathy,
I believe we may have corresponded previously but I'm posting to learn more about the Jones side of the Poehler family. My great-grand father was Bertie Jones from Oklahoma. His mother was Alice Jones (nee Poehler). We were always told that Grandpa Bert had a sister named Gladys but we know nothing else about her or what became of Alice and Gladys after they returned to England. Do you have any family photographs of Alice, Bert, and Gladys? Do you know what happened to Alice's husband Walter? We heard that Alice remarried. I am going to try to post a photo of Alice and Gladys. Thanks for your help.

Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Hi Phil,
Just wanted to say how excited I was to learn that I have kin in Scotland. I visited Scotland just this past summer and wished I would have read your message board earlier. I am a Pohler, descended from Alice Augusta Pohler, sister of your grand father, Albert Philip Pohler. I've uploaded a picture of Alice with her daughter Gladys. Alice had a son named Bertie, who is my great grandfather. He immigrated to Oklahoma in 1909 and had a daughter, Billie Bert, who was my grandmother. Thanks for posting your family genealogy and Happy New Year!

Re: Pohler Family from Islington, London, England
Dear Stuart,
Please accept my apologies for not having responded earlier which was due to an illness in the family.
It appears that we share the same great great grandfather, my great grandmother being Alice Augusta.
Best wishes, Cathy
