Hi, I am trying to fiqure out some of my family history. The origin of pohl means "by a lake or stream". The bad part about it is Hitler's last name almost means the same thing "by a river".
|
Jason, That is a real stretch. Hitler was Austrian and I am sure he was insane. Just because they both mean near water means absolutely nothing. If my dad had seen you comparing them he would have blown up, he fought in WWII against the Nazis. Did you know that Pohl is also the German version of Paul???

Jason, Sorry if I overreacted earlier. But I grew up in the 50's when the memories of the war were all too fresh and I heard that I was a Nazi a lot because I am German. It made an all too strong impact on me that lingers to this day. Didn't mean to jump all over you because of it though.

Hello Jason,
the surname "Pohl" does not mean "by the river or by the lake". Pohl is a German surname. I found out two different explanation for its origin. One says "someone who trades with Poles" the other derives the name from the word "Pfuhl" which is an obsolete word for "swamp". Pohl is in Germany quite a common name, but it originally came from the former Eastern German provinces.
There is no connection to the name "Hitler" which is an Austrian name that was probably derived from "Hiedler".
If you want to know more about your ancestry you should find out from which German town your family once came. With this information you can contact the Mormones who have thousands of German "churchbooks" (I don't know the correct English expression, I mean the book, where the local priest wrote down births, marriages etc.).
Best wishes
Andreas

Hi, my mother is Barbara Meyer, born Pohl. Her ancestor, Carl Friedrich Pohl, son of Ephraim Pohl, arrived in Cape Town in 1793. He married Hester Isabella Marx in 1799 and they had ten children. In each generation the eldest sons were named after Carl Friedrich, which was also the name of my great grandfather. The Pohl decendants are scattered throughout the country and many are musicians, artists, writers and even an actress of note. Do you have any earlier European history of the Pohl family? Let's hear from you!
