My Pohanka background has similar roots. I certainly would like to solve the family mystery. As I understand, Anna Pohanka Skarka immigrated to the U.S. from Predhradi, CZ with her four children in 1895. The children's names were Frank, Marie, Anna and Terrecia. They were Catholic, settled in southern Kansas before moving into Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Anna is buried at Okarche. The mystery is: what happened to Anna's husband? Some of the family said he died in CZ and others say he came to the U.S., too, but settled in Florida. How Anna managed to immigrant by herself with 4 children and start up a homestead on the Cherokee Outlet is not only a mystery but pretty amazing as well. Other family names tied to Pohanka/Skarka (Skarky) are Jech (Yech), Vencl, Lebeda. If anyone has any information on this branch please email me at
