It might be best to start a Pohanka message board to cover such things -- but in any case from what I know my ancestors on that side of the family were from Moravia, part of Bohemia, now Czech Republic, though they moved to Vienna, Austria in the 1850s....

My Pohanka background has similar roots. I certainly would like to solve the family mystery. As I understand, Anna Pohanka Skarka immigrated to the U.S. from Predhradi, CZ with her four children in 1895. The children's names were Frank, Marie, Anna and Terrecia. They were Catholic, settled in southern Kansas before moving into Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Anna is buried at Okarche. The mystery is: what happened to Anna's husband? Some of the family said he died in CZ and others say he came to the U.S., too, but settled in Florida. How Anna managed to immigrant by herself with 4 children and start up a homestead on the Cherokee Outlet is not only a mystery but pretty amazing as well. Other family names tied to Pohanka/Skarka (Skarky) are Jech (Yech), Vencl, Lebeda. If anyone has any information on this branch please email me at eas@midkan.net. Thanks

Surnames: Pohanka, Svoboda, Skarky
Anna Pohanka, daughter of Matthew Pohanek and Barbara Svoboda had five children. I have copies of the birth records. Anna is buried in the White Cemetery near Hunter, Garfield County, Oklahoma, as are many of the Skarky family.

As is often the case, the birth records reveal information hidden from the oral family history. This can be disturbing to some. Please let me know if you would like the full details. For now, I'll list the names and dates of the children.

Josef b. 30 July 1864; d. 22 October 1865
Anna b. 26 January 1870; d. 18 August 1912
Marie b. 30 January 1872; d. 28 June 1945
Terezie b. 23 September 1874; d. 26 May 1952
Frantisek b. 10 June 1878; d. 3 September 1952

I just began researching the Kadavy and Skarky families and believe that Anna Pohanka is my husband's great-great-grandmother. I would love to have the full details you have found in your research.
Thanks!
