Poffinbarger, Illinois, Oklahoma
I am looking for a Poffinbarger family who adopted my great-grandmother, Elmira Demaris Upton (also known as Nellie Dee Poffinbarger), in Marion County, Illinois (Kinmundy) ca 1890. She was supposedly three years old and her father was Nathaniel L. Upton who later remarried and had other children. She had two full siblings and a number of half brothers and sisters. I believe her adopted father was William Poffinbarger. They moved near to Tulsa, Oklahoma where Nellie married James Ellis Alison in 1908. I don't know anything about the Poffinbargers and would like to hear from descendants of this family. Nellie knew who her biological parents were (her mother, Magdaline D. (Taylor) Upton died young). I know more about the Uptons than I do about the Poffinbargers, which is unusual when a child is adopted at age three!

Re: Poffinbarger, Illinois, Oklahoma
I have since learned that the Poffinbargers may have been from Clark County, Illinois. Somehow they were related to a Myles family who lived in Darwin Twp, Clark Co., Illinois. A bunch of Myles witnessed Nellie's marriage to James E. Alison in Owasso, Oklahoma in 1908. They were: Bruce A. Myles, Mary E. Myles, Doris Myles, Leo Myles, Jennie Myles, and Lucinda S. Myles. Any help appreciated.

Re: Poffinbarger, Illinois, Oklahoma
Hello. I may have some leads for you for Poffinbargers from Clark Co., IL. Joshua Poffinbarger married Mary (Polly) Clatfelter on July 6, 1854 Marshall, Clark Co., IL. Their children: Alonzo Edgar "Ed", Lucretica Bell, William, & Franklin. Alonzo Edgar "Ed" Poffinbarger married Jemina/Jermianah Rodgers on Aug. 22, 1876. Their children: (1880 Census) Mary E., Stella, (Noal/Noel, & John C - born 1883 & 1885 after census).. You can look in Marshall or Martinsville in Clark Co. (where Ed, Noel, & John lived). Also, some lived near Casey, Clark Co., I think. Hope this helps. Let me know.

Re: Poffinbarger, Illinois, Oklahoma
I wish I had lots of information to give you, but I'm still working on that myself. William Poffinbarger was my great grandfather. Don't know if my grandpa (his son, Ora Luther Poffinbarger) got his crankiness from his mother or his father's side, but he was an opinionated old cuss. Carried a derringer wrapped in a tissue in the breast pocket of his shirt. According to his death record, William was born in Illinois on Feb 4, 1864 to Joshua Poffinbarger (b. Illinois) and Nancy Clatfelter (b. Ohio). The information on his death certificate was provided by Ed Poffinbarger of Marshall, Ill. The family must have stayed there awhile longer because my mother was born in Marshall, Ill in 1941 but then moved on to Gary, IN a few years later. I also just found a copy of Joshua and Mary (?) Clatfelter's marriage license dated July 6, 1854. Good luck!
