Poff/Pauff of Coffee County, Tennessee

I think I have solved a puzzle on my Poff line. I was stuck on an Elizabeth Poff on the 1850 Census of Coffee County, who I believed was the mother of my James Poff who married Eliza Ferguson and was the father of James Marshall Poff, but James was not on the 1850 Census at all. Elizabeth's other sons, Charles and Henry were on the 1850 Census. I've recently recieved information that Elizabeth was Elizabeth Bickle, daughter of John Michael Bickle. When JM Bickle died in 1855 his probate papers list Elizabeth as the widow of James Poff. Shortly after 1855 the combined Poff/Bickle families along with several other siblings packed up and moved to Izard County, Arkansas. Then clincher for me is that my James Poff, Elizabeth's son that I could not locate, is on the 1850 Census of Izard County, AR living with Elizabeth's brother John. When the rest of the family moved to AR it seems that James moved back to Coffee County and married Eliza Ferguson. They are listed on the 1860 Census of Coffee County with sons James Marshall and William. So as far as I can tell the parents of James Poff, Charles Poff and Henry Poff of Coffee County TN were James Poff and Elizabeth Bickle.

Hi Ben

I couldn't find your Lucy Ann Poff in my line of Poff's, but there were two Poff families in Coffee Co at that time that we have not been able to directly connect but are sure they must be related. In the other line there is a Lucy Poff born in Dec of 1879. I don't know who she married. I got the info on her from Dee Poff who also posts here on occasion. deespoff@galaxyinternet.net She might be able to give you more help

Ray, I have some information on an Elizabeth Poff in my line. My GGG Grandfather was Riley Poff (Pauff in the '50 census). He was married at the time to Nancy Kidd Poff. They had a daughter Elizabeth that was 12 in the '50 census. Could this be the same Elizabeth you're referring too? I am stuck at Riley and am trying to break through. Will be glad to share any info that I have.

Hi Kevin

My Elizabeth is listed as Elizabeth Pauff on page 76b of the 1850 census of Coffee County. She is listed as 55 yrs old and is living next door to her son Charles Poff. I think your James Riley Poff is probably a nephew or cousin of my James Poff, husband of Elizabeth Bickle Poff and father of James and his siblings. I believe that James was from Virginia but can't prove it.

Ray,

I agree with your assessment. I had forgotten about that Elizabeth. By the way, I have considerable information on Jacob Poff (who moved to Mississippi in 1840's) and Michael Bickel, and my Riley and another James, all Poff's who had land grants in Warren County, TN in the 1820's and 1830's. I'd love to share any information that you have to see if I can make some prior connections. I think the Viginia for my James Riley is speculation.

Ray,

Do you know if Elizabeth Bickle was married to a Mike Polk in addition to her marriage to your James Poff? I have Mike Polk listed as Elizabeth's husband, but I don't have the source of that information written down, so I'm not sure why I listed him at this time.

My husband is a descendant of a younger brother to Elizabeth Bickle Poff. His name was Henry Bickle, b. 15 Oct 1811. He is the one who settled in Izard County, AR, about 1840 and is credited with founding Bickle's Cove, AR.

I am trying to fill in all branches of the Bickle/Weitzel (Wetzel) family tree. I would like to swap information with you, as I have no information on the descendants of Elizabeth Bickle and would like to fill in the blanks.

Look forward to hearing from you at vbickle@seacove.net. Thanks, Vickie Rushton Bickle

I also came across the Mike Poke or Polk information while searching the Bickle line it was in the Bickle bible I am also confused. James william Poff Born 1805 father of Charles Poff my husbands Poff line has elluded me and although he is supposedly The father all of Elizabeth' children he was only 13 when THE oldest was born. I wonder if his birthdate is wrong. What HAPPENED TO JAMES WILLIAM POFF WHEN DID HE WIDOW ELIZABETH? To many Poffs at that time....

I have oldest daughter Sarah born about 1821 which would make James about 16 or 17 when she was born. I know he was not on the 1850 census and I don't think he was on the 1840 census either. I heard a story at one time that he had gone to Arkansas with Elizabeth's brothers and was murdered or involved in a murder but have never been able to verify that. My ancestor James Albert Poff was living in Arkansas with Elizabeth's brother John on the 1860 census.
