http://www.mindspring.com/~wpoe/poe/PoeFamilyVirginiaNotEsse...Does anyone have thoughts on the following.
Looking over the records for Essex/ Caroline County, VA, it seems clear that Samuel Poe who died in 1725 had a son named Samuel and another named Benjamin. From what I can tell, the major migration pattern of Samuel's descendants was to move to North Carolina.
As I see on the Poe lists, there was an early migration of Poe family members into Kentucky. Because so much is written about the descendants of Samuel Poe, I believe it has been assumed that the Kentucky Poe family came from Samuel of Essex.
But, there is a while other family (from what I can tell). That is the family of Samuel Poe of Prince Edward County, who came from England. This family appears in the western counties of Virginia. Even in Woodford County which became part of Kentucky and West Virginia.
We are confronted with similar names. There is Samuel Poe of Prince Edward County. You will also find Benjamin, John and Robert among these settlers. AND you find Virgil Poe. That name has often been thought to be of the Samuel of Essex family - but maybe not.
What do you know of the families that settled in western Virginia. Could the Kentucky Poe family (that also went into Indiana and Ohio) be of the English family connected to Sameul Poe of Prince Edward and NOT of the Essex/Caroline County Poe family?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Thanks for your thoughts.
