Re: POBER -- Nathan, Max, William, Abraham, etc.
My mom tells me that my Great Uncle Max immigrated to US after Russian Revolution and before WWII. He changed his last name to Pober. His original last name was Pogrebizhenskiy. He also had another brother and sister immigrated around the same time. Does this sound familiar?

Re: POBER -- Nathan, Max, William, Abraham, etc.
Maybe... there were a couple of Max Pobers alive at the same time. I have info on all this in my Pober files. Do you have any other info on your uncle Max, so I'll know which one he was? Any life dates, wife's name, burial place, or siblings' names?

Re: POBER -- Nathan, Max, William, Abraham, etc.
I believe they came over to the US around mid 1920's. According to my mom he was about 12-13 years old when he came over. I know only names of two of his sisters. My grandma's that stayed in Russia is Eugenia and another sister that emigrated to Israel later on was Anna. I don't know the name of his brother and sister that came over to the US.

A few possibilities: 1. Max POBER (b. 1891 in Dashev, Ukraine, Russia; d. 1961 NY) son of Shaya and Baila POBERESKY. Maz came to the US around 1921. He was married to Calara/Haira KALNITSKY (1893-1977). They had children Nathan, Marjory, Irving/Timko. Max's siblings included Velvel/William, Louis who went by RASKY not POBER and went to Toronto, David, and Baruch.
2. Max POBER (b. 1896 in Smella, Russia, d. 1982 in Boston) He was married to ELizabeth/Esther. I don't know much about him.
Either of those ring a bell? Please post (or email to me at the yahoo address) some more of your older family names, spouses, dates and I think I can figure something out.

My mom says that the second one is definitely my Great uncle. They were all born in Smella and later some moved to Bila Tserkva. Max and one of his brothers and one of the sisters immigrated to the US in mid 1920's. The original name was Pogrebizhenskiy. Do you know anything about him or his family? Were is he buried?
|
Don't know much about that Max POBER. He came to the U.S. shortly before 1917. He married Ethel/Elisabet sometime after he came to America. He was a tailor.
He MAY be related to the other POBERs buried in Boston, most of whom died long before he did: Israel (d. 1941), Annie (d. 1959), Lillian (d. 1928), and Louis (d. 1919).
So what else can you tell me about POBERs?
