Found out a little more: Max also went by Mottie at first. His father was prob. Asher POBER. His brother was that Louis/Levy POBER (c.1890-1919, buried at Pride of Boston cemetery, Woburn, Mass.) They were also related somehow to the Israel POBER (1881-1941) buried with Louis/Levy, and to Lillian POBER.
Max/Mottie came to the US via NY through Hamburg in 1913. He is a tailor in all documents I found so far in US and on the ship.
1. To find out more I'd strongly suggest you sent away for Max's SS5 (social security application). It will have both parents' names and more. Its something like $27 and they will get it to you in about 3 weeks. Let me know what it says! 2. What was the brother of Max's name (your grandfather)? I may have records on him.

OK, some more I found: 1. Louis (and thus your Max/Mottie uncle) is listed as "cohen" (priestly family) on his stone. 2. Do you know about a Leon POBER and Dorothy BERNSTEIN POBER? They seem to be possibly related to this branch of the family. They had a son Lawrence Stuart POBER (m. 1983 in Mass. to a Rozalen Jane). Max/Mottie worked for a BERNSTEIN, and this Leon was in Boston (very few POBERs there, most were in NY). Ring any bells?

Very interesting information. I am not sure why my great uncle would be listed as Cohen, but anything is possible. The only information I am getting is from my mom's youth memories. She doesn't know anybody else except Great aunt that emigrated to Israel. Her name was Anna/Hanna. Do you know any other information about Max? E.g. His descendants name or contact information? What cemetery Max is buried on? etc.

Don't know anything else yet. I find new stuff all the time though.
I'd recommend writing for that SS-5 (ancestry.com has a form letter for doing it). Also, monitor FindAGrave.com. They have 35 million cemetery records online and add more all the time. He'll show up in there eventually. I'll probably catch it too soon after he shows up. When the 1940 census gets posted (in 2013) and Boston marriage and birth indices whenever, that will give names of Max's children. Also a chance that one of the children or grandchildren will eventually come across this message string and contact you or me.
So Max/Mottie wasn't your grandfather's brother then?
