Name Origin, Poates Family

Name Origin, Poates Family

Classification: Query
Surnames: Poates, Poats, Potes, and maybe Poths
I have been doing research on my family tree and have hit a roadblock. The earliest I can trace back is William Lee Poates who was born in 1823 in Caroline County, Virginia. William Lee Poates is my Great-Great Grandfather.

William, in a ceremony preformed by Rev. A. Broaddus, married Sarah Jane Covington in 1852 in Caroline County, Virginia.

They had four children, Leroy Franklin, born in 1853; William H., born in 1856; Ida, birthdate unknown; and Rosa L., born in 1872.

William died in Washington, DC in 1890 and was buried in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetary in Sparta, Caroline County, Virginia.

From there I cannot find any other direct ancestors. I have found that there are various spellings to the name. Poates, Poats, and Potes. I am sure that there may be many more and that may be where my difficulties lie. If anyone is researching their family tree and has run across an ancestor of William, please share.

Other names in my tree include Covington, Chenault, Brown, Seek, Pugh, and others. I would be glad to share any information that I have discovered in my ancestory search.

Thanks for the reply. I have found other Poates that go back to the 1700, but can't find a link to our William.

I had contact, many years ago from a person in Alexandria, Va that had done some research. He spelled his last name as POATS. He said in a letter that his family goes back to a Prussian Captian that was captured at Yorktown, during the Revolutionary War, and put in the prisioner of war camp in the area of Scottstown, Va. This is in the area of present day Ashland, Va where my family comes from. I have been unable to verify this information or even that a prisoner of war camp was located there. The only prisoner of war camp anywhere near there is listed as Culpepper, Va. and this is quite a ways from Ashland. I also have come across a person that had done some research and the name was a German name, but was spelled completely different, ( POTHS )however the name is pronounced POATES. Again, I have been unable to find a link.

I have found many variations in the spelling of the name Poates. There are POATS, POTES, POTZ, POTTS, PFOUTZ and recently discovered POTHS that I mentioned earlier. It seems in earlier times, a lot of people could not read or write, so the census takers spelled the name the way that it sounded to them. The un-schooled people could not correct the spelling or even read the writing.

I guess we are stuck with William. It looks like, as far as my research goes, that William just dropped out of the sky into Virginia in 1823.

My wife lived in Roswell, New Mexico for some time and I jokingly tell her that my all of my ancestors were aliens and that Roswell is the place they landed. They just migrated to Virginia where there are trees.

If you would like me to send you a CD with the family tree that I have been able to put together, let me know. It is in the Family Tree Maker 9.0 version format.

Henry
