Georgia and Alabama Poage's or Pogue's

Surnames: Pogue, Poage
Hello all,

I am looking for any information on the following Poage/Pogue's from Georgia and Alabama in the 1800s:

James E. Pogue (1800-?) Born in Georgia and to my knowledge died in Alabama. Married to Mary Polly Elizabeth Clark. Had four children that I know of: Robert, Alfred, Harriet, Nancy. I believe his parents came from Virginia, but I'm not sure.

Alfred/Alford Clark Pogue (1833-after 1900) He was born in Georgia and settled in Coosa County, Alabama. He died in Eclectic, Elmore County, Alabama. He married Mary J. Wall, daughter of James Augustus Wall and Rebecca Mason Jeffries. They had several children, but I don't know all the names, these are the ones I have.
Sons: Thomas, James, Tilden, A.C, Jessie,
Daughters: Sarah Louise, Martha, Mary,

If anyone could provide information I'd appreciate it. I'd also like to know what the correct spelling of the last name is, Pogue or Poage? I've seen it both ways.

Regards,
Laura Williams

Did you ever find out more information? I am a direct descendant of James E Poage. I think he was born in Tennessee nit Georgia bit not positive.

I cannot find who James E's father was. My guess is John Lewis Poage from South Carolina. Why do you think Virginia?

Thanks

Wayne,
I, too, am descended from James E. Poage and am so excited to hear that someone has busted the brickwall!
Please let me know what you know or how you know it?
If that is not too much to ask?

Karen:

I'm not exactly sure I busted the brick wall. I was always led to believe we were descendants of Robert Poage of Virginia. However, in researching the book "The Descendants of Robert and John Poage", there is absolutely no record/mention of James E. Poage, Alfred Clark Poage, or any of my relatives.

I met a person on Ancestry.com that suggested John Lewis Poage. John Lewis Poage, a Scotch-Irish, came to South Carolina in 1787 by himself at the age of 18 from Antrim, Ireland. There is not much information about him.

John Lewis' age and where he lived make sense that he very well could be the father of James E. Poage. James E. was born in 1793 according to an application made by his widow for a pension from his service in the War of 1812 and in the Seminole War.

I'm pretty sure James E. was born in Tennessee - the area where the Scotch-Irish lived in South Carolina bordered Tennessee.

John Lewis also had a son named Alfred. James E name one of his sons Alfred C. - he would be my great, great grandfather.

Alfred named one of his sons John L. Poage.

Not much evidence but the best I can find so far.

Are you Dee Dee's daughter?

Wayne,

It has been at least a year since I did any research on this part of my family.
I believe it's Georgia because the census records all list him as being born there. It could very well be Tennessee also however since they border and state lines have not always been what they are now.

I believed Virginia because of something I had read. That was my fault. I have since learned not to trust everything you read in the genealogy world, especially if sources aren't sited. Census records say his parents were born in Georgia.

I'm not really sure if we are talking about the same James Pogue, since they have different middle initials, but they seem to be very similar history..... This some research my uncle did on my family history.

James P. Pogue (son of Emily ?) was born 1828 in Georgia, and died date unknown. He married Elizabeth ? on Abt. 1849 in Georgia.
Includes NotesNotes for James P. Pogue:
Since their ages were 32 and 30 in the 1860 census, believe that Alfred was their first born, which would place their marriage around late 1849 to sometime in 1850, and probably in Georgia. A search for James P Pogue did not turn up a Pogue family with the wife named Emily, nor with a son named James P. At age 22 (in 1850) James P may not have been living at home; but no record was found at all.No record could be found of the family after 1860.Because of the Civil War, possibility exists that James P. Pogue was killed during the war (most likely Confederate. Elizabeth may have taken the children to live elsewhere. She may have remarried.
Burial: July 12, 1860, Census Gunterville Pg 876 Family 593.
Fact 2: Farmer.
Marriage: Abt. 1849, Georgia.
Children of James P. Pogue and Elizabeth ? are:
i.Alfred W Pogue, b. 1852, Georgia, d. date unknown.
ii.+Martha J Pogue, b. 1854, Alabama, d. date unknown.
iii.+Adelaid H Pogue, b. 1852, Georgia, d. date unknown.
iv.+Mary Frances Pogue, b. October 16, 1857, Marshall County, Al, d. December 28, 1932, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. She married William Rylie Hinshaw on June 07, 1877 in Jackson Country, Al, son of Thomas Hinshaw.

Mary Frances Pogue is my great, great grandmother.
