In a message from a Torrans/Torrens researcher in Ireland was a note that Genforum had a Poag forum with a query on it about a Poag in York county SC. I can't locate Poag, Poague, or Poaug on Genforum. Please access the Torrens/Torrans webpage at torrens-l@4qd.co.uk and read the messages titled "Theorizing re Torrans of Charleston, SC". John Torrans was in business with a John Poaug in Charleston between the 1750s and 1780. Are you connected to that John Poague? Even if not you will be interested in Linde's discussion of the connections in Ireland among Torrans, Gregg, and Poague families. These three names were also connected in shipping and trade in Charleston, SC. If interested please contact me. Thanks.

Anne, I was unable to access the Torrens web site you mentioned. Is the address still valid? I am also researching John Torrans of Charleston. My ggggrandfather was John R. Torrans b. abt 1789 South Carolina m. Mary d.1850-60 Lauderdale Co., MS. Children:Eliza b.1822;Rachel E. b.1826; John Robert b.1828; William b.1831; Daniel E. b.1833; Mary Jane b.1838. All born in SC. Could possibly be son of one of John's three sons, William Hunter, Robert or John Gordon. Would appreciate any info or help you can give. Thanks, Anne Wilson

The Torrens/Torrans/Torrence/Torrance website is http://www.4qd.co./torrens/ That should give instructions for getting on the mailing list. If it dosen't,the site owner is Richard Torrans, email Torrens@4qd.co.uk email him and ask to be put on the mailing list. The list email is Torrens-l@4qd.co.uk One or the other should get him

We may be connected but I don't know how. My John's son John Gordon died without children. Son Robert was a minor and listed in his father's will in 1780 but not listed in his mother's will some years later. The only information we have on Robert is in his father's will. We have an undated notice of the burial of "John Torrans' child"and that may be Robert. William Hunter # 1, John's other son is my ancestor. He had five sons and two daughters. The sons were John, William Hunter 2, Hugh, Thomas, and James and the daughters were Sarah and Caroline. That is the order they were listed in in their grandmother's will. We know nothing about any of them except William Hunter 2 This will was made in 1817 and John was alive then and probably the oldest son because he is named after his grandfather and is listed first in the list of sons. Do you know where yours lived in SC?

Anne, Thanks for the reply and the info. I am trying to determine where in SC John R. Torrans was from. Only info I have at this time is the 1850 MS census stating he was 61 and family was from SC. I have also found a John R. Torrans listed on the muster rolls of War of 1812 in Rutledge's 3rd Regement SC State Troops. I have searched every Torrance, Tarrance, Tarrant and Torrans in SC and the only link I found was your John having sons named William, Robert John. My John R. Torrans also named his sons William and John Robert. Do you have any dates for William Hunter #1 or his son John? Thanks, Anne

To Anne Wilson I know a lot more about the SC Torranses than when I wrote to you a couple of years ago. Was your John the son of a William? My John Torrans (1702-1780) had six children. Only one of the three boys, William Hunter, had children. He had five sons John, William Hunter(2) Thomas, Hugh and James and two daughters Sarah and Caroline. Do you know the names of any of your John's brothers or sisters or his father's name? The second William Hunter is my great grandfather. (There would usually be a couple of more generations in there but I am the youngest child of a youngest child of a youngest child so there is about 146 years between William 2's birth and mine. He was born about 1789 give or take a year or so. I have just sent for a pension application which should give me his birth date. I listed the five boys as they were listed in their grandmother's will which is probably from the oldest to the youngest. That would make John the oldest so born somewhere in the late 1780s. Does that fit what you have about your John? Please let me know if this fits. (What does your John's R. stand for?) Bye, cuz. Anne

Re: Seek contact with Poags in NW South Carolina, in or around York
I have a Martha Jane Poag born around 1842 in York, South Carolina. Her parents are James Poag and Elizabeth (Kerr). She married W.J. Isom and later moved to Texas. All I know about James is that his father's name is William.
