Unfortunately not - just says "1822 Apr 23 John Hansell, bachelor, labourer & Mary Knaggs, spinster, both of this
parish, banns, with consent of parents
Wit Jane Elgie, Ralph Greenbury "

Almost every entry says "with consent of parents and so I don't think it means they were under age 21.

Being "of this Parish" does not tell us much since just living there for a few weeks would qualify and they could have lied anyway.

The witness Jane ELGIE might be significant or could be just a friend of either party.

This could be Jane getting married herself a few weeks later "1822 May 14 John Corner, bachelor, merchant & Jane Dickinson Elgie, spinster, both of this parish, licence, with consent of parents
Wit Ann Hudson Waller?, John CopperWhite

Ralp Greenbury, as you probably know, was singing most entries presunmably being Clerk or similar.

I was having a browse in old newspapers and came across these reports regarding the death of the Philip POAD in 1855 which may be of interest.
It was a bad year for that family with two children also dying.

Will of Philip POAD of RHB, 1838

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 5:58PM GMT
Classification: Will
Today I received a copy of the will of Philip POAD who I believe married Elizabeth KNAGGS (nee VALENTINE was it?)

I was hoping that he might have mentioned a step daughter called Mary HANSELL (nee KNAGGS) but no such luck.

I've attached a transcript as it may be of interest to you.

I notice that none of the baptisms of the three sons show up in the IGI. Maybe they were non-conformists.

The bequests of five pounds to the two girls seems a little odd. Maybe they were Neices; daughters of sisters of Philip.

Actually it will not let me attach a word document so I've pasted the text below. The formatting might go to rats.

I recently loaded up the will Of Philip POAD who I believe married widow Elizabeth KNAGGS (nee VALENTINE) I had a theory that Mary KNAGGS (the daughter of Elizabeth VALENTINE) born c. 1802 in Sneaton may have married a chap called HANSELL.

Philip left £5 to Betsey Daur of Herbert PRODHAM which puzzled me.

Checking up Herbert in the 1851 census I see that he was born c. 1797 in Fylingdales. His wife Mary was born 1802 in Sneaton and they have a son called Valentine PRODHAM born c. 1839.

So I guess this shows that the Mary KNAGGS born in Sneaton did not marry John HANSELL. I cannot find a trace of the marriage but she seems to have married Herbert PRODHAM.

I guess that the other girl who got £5 (Hanah JILSON) may also be a grandaughter of Elizabeth the wife of Philip POAD.

Well you can't win them all.

In the will of Philip POAD the bequest to Hannah daur of John JILLSON puzzled me as in 1851 John JILLSON born c. 1888 Fylingdales is with wife Mary born c. 1806 Fyl. and daur Hannah born c, 1827.

However the St Stephens MIs solve the problem. John's first wife Hannah dies in 1828 aged 25. That fits with her being the second child of George KNAGGS and Elizabeth VALENTINE who was born Hannah KNAGGS 27 May 1803 baptised 15 Jun 1803 to George KNAGGS & Elizabeth at Sneaton, batch C109612.

So in the will of Philip POAD the two girls mentioned are both grandchildren of his wife Elizabeth VALENTINE by her first husband George KNAGGS.

Many thanks, Bryan, for the interesting will of Philip Poad. At least I know now tht he was a butcher living at Fylingthorpe in a house with a garden and tht his two friends were the two farmers from Fylingdales.

Yes, the christiam name 'Valentine' is a give-away; clearly Mary is using her mother's nee name as a first name for her son. Bt perhaps she , like her mother, was also married more than once and tht she did marry a Jno Hansell?

Cheers, Conrad
