I am trying to find information on the origins of my last name. I know that my grandfather was of German descent, but I've had many people tell me my last name is actually French. My grandfather's name was William Plier and he was from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Born circa 1921. If there is anyone with ancestry information regarding the Plier name, please post a message. Thank You!

Hi Sandy,
I am interested in the surname Plear. I understand that my son in laws g-grandfather was the earliest person the family knows of with the Plear spelling. I wondered if your spelling which came up under soundex, was the original. I understand it is french, and it does sound french to me. Have you found out anything about your name. Do you say your Plier like you would say clear only with a "P"? Thanks for your help. Cheryl

Hello Cheryl:
I've been told by some family members that Plier is indeed pronounced like "clear" with a P. My family prounounces it like the tool (pliers). I have also been told by a few of my professors that Plier is French and is actually pronounced plee-air. My family has always thought Plier is German since that was my grandfather's heritage. Most of my relatives from the Wisconsin area do say Plier like clear with a P, which means that Plier could very well have been the original spelling of Plear. It would make sense since people sometimes spell names phonetically. I haven't been able to find out much else about my name, but I hope this helps you a bit. Thanks for your reply! SP

I am Researching my Plier History
My Gr Gr Grandfather Charles G Plier, Married to Christia Logan came to Australia In the 1860s
We Have Been told That He Came From Prussia
And that they were from French decent.
That The Pliers Imigrated from France In the 1700s
We have also been told That it is Pronounced
As Plee-air
Any Info to help my Quest to find out where we came from in Prussia would be appreciated

Hi, my mother is a Plier from Ala. we too thought the name originated from Germany. Two young brothers got off a ship in this country from (Germany) via Ireland, and on to the US. They went their separate ways and we have searched for our relatives for years, not knowing where one brother went and started his family. We are the only pliers here in Alabama, so I suspect we may be your distant relatives.. I would love to hear all about your family history, to compare notes!!

Hi,
Thank you for your reply to my message. I am the grandmother of two Plear grandchildren and am working on the family tree for them as well as all of my grandchildren.
I am not so well versed in this line of the family as yet, so I have passed on your message to my daughter and son in law, Wendy and Dennis Plear. Hopefully they will get in touch with you, or pass it on to the person in Dennis' family that is doing their tree. I have no information about where Dennis and his family immigrated from, so if this works out, his line very well may tie into yours. Thank you, Cheryl

How interesting! My grandfather's name was William P. Plier, and he was originally from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. His mother's maiden name was Ernster. Our family is from Southern Texas, and as far as I know, we are the only Plier's. I don't know much about the Plier family history, but I do know that we had an ancestor by the name of Niklaus (sp?) Plier that settled from Germany in the Wisconsin area. I have been confused as to whether Plier is actually prnounced like "clear" or like plee-air. I have had several professors tell me my name is French, but I've always been told that it's German. Any clues?
Thanks.
