Greetings,

I've recently located a Nelms from Franklin County NC (1850) in my family tree. She's a direct lineal ancestor and she's also my brick wall. I would be immensely grateful for any information you have on the Nelms family of Franklin.

Please provide what information you have thus far: which Nelms, when they lived there, and any other information you may have and I will try to help you.

Thank you so much! Unfortunately all I know is that her name was Nancy Nelms and that a marriage bond was executed in Louisburg in January of 1850 for her marriage to Joseph Boothe. In 1860 she is living in Nash County with three sons: John, Elias, James Gray, and William, but Joseph is absent. By 1865 she has abandoned one of her sons, James Gray, to live with the neighbor John Collins and has married William Brown. The other three sons were on their own by then.

I'm not even sure what other resources to look for - the Register of Deeds in Nash County has nothing, and neither does the Register of Deeds in Franklin County. I found an original copy of the marriage bond at the State Archives in Raleigh.

I do think there is a connection, but need to do some more in-depth research. My line has an Elias (b. 1771). Nelms moved to Franklin Co. from Isle of Wight, VA. He was married twice. My descendant, James Norfleet Nelms is from second marriage, to Matilda (?). James Norfleet had a daughter Nancy (b. 1853) so she cannot be your Nancy, but is probably related - a niece or cousin (?). My direct e-mail is belynda.stewart1@verizon.net if you prefer to contact me directly.
