My 4th grandfather's original surname was Pleas. His son Maurice changed it to Place.
Maurice was born April 1, 1779 and died Nov 13, 1862. I can't find any information on Isaac, the father.

The following may be of some help; however
the DOB for Maurice doesn't seem to fit:
Pleas Notes:
From the LDS Familysearch.org:
Isaac Pleas DOB 1771, No. Carolina.
Spouse: Jane Lancaster
Film 198030, pg. 77, ref. nr. 31040
Jane Lancaster DOB 15.03.1774, Wrightstown, PA
Parents: Aaron Lancaster Sarah Palmer
Film 184192, pg. 406, ref. nr. 9454
The above data confirms augments that
found in The Lancaster Family, Harry Fred
Lancaster, A. J. Hoover Printing Co.,
Huntington, IN, 1902.
That family history reports that Isaac Place,
son of Maurice Pleas/Place, was born circa
1818, and resided in No. Manchester, IN,
and was the father of Arvid Lancaster Place,
of Goshen, IN.
The only other reference to Isaac Pleas
was that his father owned a lumber business,
somewhere in NC, and that he died in Richmond,
IN, early in the 19th century.
Inasmuch as the data in the
family history book seems verifiable, I'll keep
digging further for the ancestors of Isaac
Pleas.

My mother's maiden name was Pleas. Her father was Roy Michael Pleas b.1891 in WI. Her father told her that the name was changed when they came to this country, she cannot remember exactly what he had said but it was something along the line of Du Pleiss, or Du Plessius. My mother was told that her grandfather (Issac Pleas) came to Indiana from NY, so you may want to try looking there. I hope this is somewhat helpful, I have more info on the Pleas' if you would like it.
