As you can see, my last name is a bit unusual and
it is very similar to how my ancestors spelled their
surname back in Switzerland prior to fleeing to
Germany to escape religious persecution. Here are
some other spellings: Peickensdoerffer, Blickensdoerfer,
Blickensderfer, etc. There is not much chance that
the surname you are searching for may be related
to one of these names, but I am desperate. Do you have
any information about your ancestors back in Switzerland
OR am I on a wild goose chase?

Forgive me if I have wasted your time, but I will never
be able to go to Switzerland and I am using the Internet
to do my searching.

Take care, have good fortune as you search,
and God bless.

Hi Theresa;

Being new to message boards and genealogy, I am not
a very good source for information at present. I have
quite a bit of information but it has not been
entered into a computer program. Unless I know specific
names, dates, etc. for several generations, I takes
me a long time to locate specific people.

I have a web page you may visit to seee a summary of what
I have and my interests.

I am willing to share and exchange information, but I
must find a way to enter my data into a computer
program since I am not a good typist.

I have reached my "brick wall" at the Hans Jakob
BLICKENSDOERFER generation which began in Switzerland.

Since I have no information on the surname
in the subject of this note, you may have information
that I can use about people who lived prior
to the 1700s in Switzerland. I hope so.

Take care and God bless.

Marvin bLICKENSTAFF (in Maryland)

I live only 2 miles from the original
homestead of Jost (Yost) BLICKENSTAFF.

Theresa;

I just posted a note that contained my web site, but
the URL was not printed. Is there a rule that
prohibits posting web URLs in in LIST? I will
try again:

Looking for information on Rachel Pleak born about 1809. Parents Johann Pleak and Ester Wade. Have been told this is a shorted version of Pleakenstrauffer. She married William Cantwell Dec 2, 1830 in Bartholomew County Indiana (then part of KY). Does anyone have any information on Rachel or her parents?

Hello Pam;

I don't have a lot of information about Rachael
and what I have may have errors since it is so
sketchy. My information is not in computer format
and I don't know how to put it in that format yet.

Great grandparents of Rachael:
Hans Jakob BLICKENSDöERFER Katharina________?
Switzerland, Canton Zug. They fled CH to
Germany to escape religious persecution, c. 1715.
In Germany, families were allowed only one
male heir per family and four of five sons
had to leave. They came to America, 1749-1753.
Here is where I want to begin my personal
search going back in time.

One son was:
Johannes BLICKENSDöERFER, Rachael's grandfather.
Johannes was married but I don't know her name.
He died after 1800 in Washington Co. TN

They had two children John and Catharina.
Catharina used PLICKENSTOLPHER for a surname.
John used PLEAKANSTALVER or just PLEAK.

John (you have Johann) was born c. 1755 near
Boonesboro, KY and died c. 1816/1817
John m. Ester WADE daughter of Dawson WADE

Siblings for Rachael were:
Susan PLEAK who was married by 1816 to____WASSON
Elizabeth PLEAK was married by 1816 to____SNYDER
John W. PLEAK m. Nancy HARDY 2 Dec 1834
and lived in Bartholomew Co. IN
Fielding (Lewis) PLEAK b. 24 Dec 1790 d.24 Dec 1835
married Sabrina VIRT b. Pittsburgh PA and
died 24 Dec 1975 in Decatur Co. IN

All I have on Rachael is:
She was married to _________SNYDER
or SNIDER by 1816.

If my data is correct, William
CANTWELL must have been her second
husband.

This information appears on page
152 of over 400 pages I purchased
from three ladies who spent over
30 years collecting data on the
Hans Jakob and Katharina
BLICKENSDöERFER mentioned above.

I'm sure the ladies from whom I
obtained this informaiton would
love to have your information
because this "branch" of the
"family tree" has very little
information. If you would like
to contanct one of these ladies with
your information,I will send you her
postal address in e-mail.

A summary of the data I obtained
from her can be seen at:

If you contact me again, please use my
e-mail address because this FamilyHistoryList
is mostly for "contacts" not long lists
of data. I do not read the posts on this web site
very often because my interests go too far
back in time. I've not had useful information
in over 2 years.

I hope the above information is correct. If
any of it is not, I apologize for the ladies
who worked so hard to find what is so scarce.

Take care and God bless.

Marvin

Pam-
My family traces their ancestry to Fielding Pleak who was Rachel's brother. I have the following transcribed document "The Decatur County Pleaks"
"Today you may see the birth certificate of the original member of the Pleak family born in Holland in the year 1726 Johann Pleakenstalver (this transcription is typed--hand written above "Pleakenstalver" is "Blickenstorffer")left Amsterdam in 1750 (we believe he was born in Rotterdam of German descent in 1726)with a sister and two brothers for Jamestown but he eventually settled near Castletons Fort, now Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. His abilities as a scout frequently brought him into scouting service and he became one of the best-known of the pioneers of the region.
One day while scouting for a party of salt makers, he followed an Indian trail to a salt "lick", discovering encamped about the "lick", a band of Indians. These aboriginals maintained a loose guard and were lolling about the camp in lazy comfort. Johann was alone, and of course hardly could expect to be a match for the entire camp, but he demonstrated some originality and pulling off his high-top Dutch hat, he yelled in his native tongue:'What ye doin' here, ye lazy rascals!' which so affrightened the Indians that they broke camp instantly and ran pellmell, disappearing in the depths of the forest darkness, leaving their war accoutrements behind. These Johann very carefully gathered up, and taking them back to the fort sold them, the money realized from the sale of this booty being applied to the purchase of land he bought near the Fort. Shortly after this, his marraige to Miss Wade, a sister of General Wade took place. (Until I saw Marvin's reply to your request, I did not know her name was Ester, nor that her father's name was Dawson--my grandfather's name was Dawson Steuben Pleak. I now know where the name Dawson came from). Of their 10 children, one son was slain by Indians; a couple of daughters married and settled around Hope, Indiana but the son Fielding we are concerned with in Decatur County.
The son Fielding born in 1792, married Sibinah Vert in 1814 and in 1822 entered 80 acres of land in Washington Township--where he first built a brush and blanket covered leanto for his wife and babies and then returned to Kentucky for their furniture. Meanwhile his wife went ahead with his plans for a log cabin and sawed the logs and had 4 courses of a log cabin erected upon his return. The cabin when completed, eventually housed their 13 children and was on the site of the present Ati Morgan stone farm home..."
"...Still recalling the 13 children of this settler, Fielding, was one named for generals in the Revolutionary War: Narcus Baron Steuben Isaac Henry Fielding Lewis who is buried in Shilo Cemetary. His father, Fielding also had these names but their tombstones vary only in the last name which first was Pleakenstlaver and the next generation was only Pleak..."
I have in my possession the family Bible which starts with Fielding. It names all of the son's names--Narcus Baron, etc., but Fielding's name is written only as "Fielding Pleak". From the Bible, Fielding was born December 24, 1792 and died December 29,1835. Fielding's wife, Sibinah Vert (spelling from the Bible, the writing is very clear) was born January 15, 1788 according to the Bible with the entry changed to 1781 based on the fact "she was 6 months old at the siege of Bryant Station by the Indians". They were married June 9, 1814.
Regretably, the only original document I have is the Bible. I do also have a transcribed copy of the Will of John Pleakenstalver. The name is spelled "Pleakandstalver" throughout this document. The will was executed April 11, 1814. Children mentioned in the will are Susana Wason, Elizabeth Sydner, Rachel Sydner who received one black filly twenty dollars, one feather bed at twenty dollars, one cow and calf at twelve dollars, four head of sheep at six dollars and four shillings, John W. Pleakandstalver, Narcus Baron Steuben Isaac Fielding Lewis Pleakandstalver, George Green Washington Berry Pleakandstalver, Elliott Nun Pleakandstalver, Tolitha Pleakandstalver (daughter), Dawson Pleakandstalver.
The Will is transcribed from Will Book B, Page 203, Montgomery County, Kentucky.
Rachel was married to Mr. Sydner before April 11, 1814 (the date the will was signed).
I have a one page document with some marraiges which states that Rachel Pleak married William Cantwell December 2, 1830. This would indeed have been her second marriage. They were married in Bartholomew County, Indiana. Note: All of the references I have spell the name "Rachel".
That's all I can add, good luck!

I found Charle Pleak's information to be fascinating. I also have some of the information. If you are interested in researching further there are many Pleaks in Indianapolis who are direct descendents of Fielding. I will pass this along to my brother who lives in Indianapolis, his name is Orian E. Pleak. If you are interested in contacting him, many of the grandchildren live in the area.

There is also a man in Boise, Idaho who has done considerable research, His name is Jan Blickenstaff. Thank you Cheryl Pleak, Seattle, Washington
