Hi,

My name is Paul Placido. My great grandfather came to Hawaii from the Azores and settled in Oahu (in late 1800's), but moved several times. In researching my family history, I've hit a 'road-block' with this relative. According to my older living relatives, my great-grandfather's name was Antone Placido. The family story is that he was adopted in the Azores, and the original surname may have been Pacheco. He came to Hawaii alone on a British ship (we think). If this sounds like a common relative, I can fill you in on all I know so far. It's a fairly common name, so there may be no relation, but it sounds like it's worth exploring. I hope we can help each other.

Good Luck and Take Care
Paul

I forgot to mention in my last letter... my grandmother thinks my great-grandfathers might have gone by his middle name -- Manuel. His wife's maiden name was Robello (we think). Hope this helps.

Paul,

Manuel Placido and Georgina diMello are my father-in-law's grandparents. Anthony was their child. Anthony went to the mainland play with his combo at the PanAmerican Festival in the Bay area. Of course he told us he rode over on a sea turtle. I have many family stories that perhaps you could share with you grandmother. Please email me back directly. tjplacido@hotmail.com.
Also family legend states Georgina and Manuel were originally enroute to Brazilm however due to a war, they stayed on the ship, went around the Cape and to Hawaii. The Placidos settled mainly in Kauii. Some worked on the wall at Molokai. Georgina had a fingerbone of Father Damien that she kept in a handerchief with her bible. One of her daughter was the warden at a women's prison n the big island. One ancestor died holding up one end of a bridge during a terrible storm so his family could go to higher ground. I have more, keep in touch.

My Gosh I think we are related but in my case through an adoption. My mother tells me these are her relatives: Antone Placido (grand uncle of her grandmother); Coosey Placido, Julia Placido, Saraphina Placido. My mother's adopted parents are Steve Carvalho and Mary PLACIDO Carvalho.

Thank you for your response. I do not know if we are related
please talk more to your mother to see if Georgina diMello or Mello or Silva
is in her memory. You may be related to Paul Placido's line through Antone. To the best of my knowledge
our ancestor was Manuel Placido. Any help or information you can provide would be very
much appreciated.

Tracy.

Placido's and Carvalho's in Hawaii

Hi Mary and Tracy J.,
I'm Pam, the sister of Paul Placido whom you both responded to last June, 2000 regarding your ancestors named Placido from Hawaii. I happened upon this website by chance and found my brother's posting. Since June, my daughter had to do a family tree in her class. I think it might be of some interest to the both of you! Here's what we found: David Joseph Placido born 10.18.11 in Naalehu, HA and died 5.22.92 (This is our paternal grandfather). His father was Antone Placido born in 1857 in the Portuguese islands of the Acores. We're not sure which one. It's possible that it may have been San Miguel. Antone was married to Ermalinda (Rebello) Placido who was born in 1876 also in the Acores. They both died in 1916. Ermalinda died first but we don't know how. Antone went into a depression because he didn't want to live without her and eventually stopped eating. He died soon afterward. The official report says some sort of colon disorder which would have been caused by not eating. They had 9 children. Joe was the oldest then (we're not sure what order came next) Tony (who went by "Plaus", short for "Placido"), Mary, Sarah, Cosie (or Cozie), Julia, Lizzie (whose formal name may have been Louise), David (my grandfather) and Bea (short for Beatrice) who was the youngest. My grandfather was the youngest boy and the second to the youngest child. The age span was far apart so by the time David came along, some of the older ones were already on their own with their own families. Such as Mary who married a Steven Carvalho. They had about 5 children that we know of: Jimmy, Manuel, Carrie, Mary and Clarence. Clarence married an Asian woman with the last name of Caminos. They couldn't have kids so they adopted at least one son that we know of. My parents were newly weds and remember going to this child's first birthday party around late 1963 or early 1964.

Of course, if those Carvalho's don't work for you, I have some on the other side who are not related to the Mary and Steven Carvalho's! :-) My grandfather, David Placido, married Marie (Carvalho) Placido. She was born on 11.26.12 in Kohala, HA. and is still alive today! Her father was Manuel Carvalho born 9.3.1882 and died Sept. 1966. He was from Kohala, too. His wife was Mary (Moniz) Carvalho, also from Kohala and was born on 4.18.1886 and died on 4.21.1937. I don't have a whole lot of information on that side of the family but all it takes is a phone call to Grandma! If this sounds like anyone's ancestors, please contact me! You never know! My other brother and his family moved to Idaho and found long lost relatives just by pure chance and happenstance! Feel free to e-mail me at chocletlvr@aol.com Pam

Hi Mary,
I think that we are related. My husbands family is from Hawaii. Pam who posted and earlier message is my sister in law. My husband's grandfather David was Mary (Placido) Carvalho's sister. He lived with her for a time after their parents passed away. Is your mother's name Barbara? I know that Mary and Steven Carvalho adopted at least one child. If you have any information or if I might be able to provide any please contact me. My email address is TAZDVL0709@aol.com
