Have you tried contacting the Greenfield Cemetery in Hempstead, Queens County, New York? I seem to recall seeing a Place/Van de Water tombstone there. You may find information about this family line through cemetery records. Also, are you a member of the PLACE list on Rootsweb? There are a lot of people on this list who might be of assistance. (We may be distant cousins, as my PLACE line goes back to the 1600's on Long Island.) Good luck! _Judy Place Maggiore

Hi Bob!
What pictures do you have? Did you obtain a copy of the plot information from the office at Greenfield? They have been very helpful to me. My great grandmother, Sarah (Sprague) Place, is buried there. She was the wife of Samuel S. Place (Jr.) and the daughter of Samuel Sprague. She is buried in her parents' lot. Her husband died at sea in 1884, so he has no grave and no one put up a stone for him (YET!) I have traced a lot of his line back to the 1600's on Long Island, but I have not yet done all the collateral lines. I have photos of Sarah Place's grave (and family). But I am curious about the ancestry of Jane Place, too. Keep in touch and let me know what you find out. (someplaceintime@uswest.net) THANKS!

Bob,I read your post and was wondering if I could impose upon you to check for a Daniel, Rebecca and Susan at Greenwood for me when you go back in August. I have been working on the Van De water line for some time but ran into a snag here. I know they died some time after 1880 as they appeared on the 1880 census for Hempstead.
Thank you,
George

This may help a little bit in your search. In a will dated 18 Oct 1779, Samuel Place of New York City wrote his will. He named as executors of the will Thomas Place, his brother, and Benjamin Vandewater. This Benjamin I believe to be the Benjamin Vandewater that married Maria Colyer.

Benjamin has a son he named John O. Smith Vandewater. Interestingly, one of the witnesses was a Richard Smith Place.

There is a definite connection between the three families. I suspect if you could find out a little more about Samuel and Thomas Place you will find Jane!
