Surnames: Place, Judd
William M Place enlisted in Company B of US 3rd Cavalry in March of 1860 before anybody imagined a civil war. He indicated that born in 1840 in Pottan Township, Quebec. Pottan Township's southern boundary is the Northern Border of Orleans County, Vermont and the United States. A large lake which extends about 15 miles north of the border and at least 5 miles south of the Border forms the eastern boundary of this township. For most of the 19th century this border was highly transparent. The area was settled during the first half of the century in large part by American Citizens- many of whom maintain property in both countries. Many residents are found on the census of both Countries.

I am trying to find the family of William. Benjama Place was born in Potton Township in 1809 and there is a Seel Place listed in the 1825 Census. William is not descended from Benjama but could be descended from a sibling to Benjama. The Benjama Place family is well documented and none of his children line up with my William.

Most of what is Potton and Sutton townships were part of a land grant which was distributed to a group of Americans who settled the land in the first decade of the 19th Century. One of those original land owners was a Richard Place.

My recent DNA testing shows matches with several descendants of Samuel Place, who resided in Vermont and I have a predicted 2nd to 4th cousin match whose has Judd ancestors who were in the area of Northern Vermont and Eastern Ontario. Phebe Judd was Benjama Place's wife.

I am hoping that a researcher of the Place Family in Quebec's Eastern Townships will read and respond.
