April 11, 1836 Andrew Place and wife Susan Cork had a baby boy named John Wesley Place. The family lived in an area called Belvidere near Toronto Canada. About 1840 the family immigrated to New York State. John Wesley shows up in Lorraine Township, Jefferson County N.Y. in 1870 married to his second wife Lucy Gilman. Parents names come from his enlistment papers for the Civil War as does his place of birth.

Can you provide the source of the documentation for the above regarding the parentage of John Wesley Place.

I am aware that the New York Town Clerks report of the civil war veterans is a source but I have not been able to locate any other confirming sources. The record citing John Wesley is a handwritten transcription of another document and there clearly errors in the transcription for some known items so other items may also be suspect as to their validity and require confirmation from another source.

The transcriber use Henry as John's middle name instead of Wesley and he wrote Belvidere Canada for John's Birthplace. There was no town in Ontario or Upper Canada of that time with that name. It is more likely that correct town of John's birth is Bellevue in Hastings County on the Bay of Queinte. John is likely a descendent of Places who were loyalists during the American Revolution and the area around the Bay of Quinte was a significant area of settlement for the veterans of the King's Royal Rangers to which some of the Places were members.

John's mother's first name can be confirmed in various census where she is listed with her 2nd husband Curtis Fessendum. In the US 1850 census(Jefferson County NY), John Wesley Place is listed as step son in the household, and has the occupation of a "sailor". In the 1855 NY State Census, Susannah's birthplace is listed as Canandaigua NY.

We can confirm her first name as Susannah but there is no confirmation of her last name nor the first name of John Wesley's father.

this is written a Query in hopes that they may be someone out there with documentation or a reference to another source.

Susan Cork is John Wesley Place' mother. Her picture is on the website for Jefferson County, donated by the owner http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/jefferson/hounsfield/h...
Johns' fathers name is listed only in the civil war record kept by the town, I have not found it any other place. We now believe that John was born in raised in Belleville a hamlet in Ellisburg township. Why he said that he was born in Canada, we don't know.

I question of the accuracy of the transcription of the actual enlistment papers by the Town Clerk who clearly misread John's middle name "Henry" rather than "Wesley" That mis-reading leads to questions about the parents names and the place of birth.

Unfortunately, the records in the US archives do not help resolve this question. The actual enlistment document would be valuable and I wonder if they are available locally.
