This is my first post to this site regarding the Piwnicki family history. I am third generation American Piwnicki. I am actively researching my family roots. I have alot of sporadic information over different time periods but I need help with the Polish / Prussian areas. My grandfather (Francisek Piwnicki) and grandmother (Stephania Pawlowska Piwnicki) were both from the Wloclawek and Torun region. They migrated to U.S. around 1906. Although no record at Ellis Island website. Would appreciate any and all help to connect these two individuals to family line in Europe. HELP?

Re: In Search Of Piwnicki
Hello Ronald,
As you can see, I am a Piwnicki and am very interested in searching my family history. Until about 1 year ago, I thought the only Piwnicki's in the world were my family and grandparents. I have seen that there is a group of them in the Chicago area. This is what I can tell you at the moment without consulting my grandmother. My father is Lawrence Piwnicki, grandfather was Joseph Jonathan Piwnicki. I believe he was born in either 1919 or 1921. He was born in US - New Britian, CT. As you know being of Polish decent, New Britian was and still is a large Polish community. From what my aunt has told me, his father (my great-grandfather) came over with his entire family spare one brother. This is why I thought I could account for all Piwnicki's. However, she also said that they lost touch and thinks that he may have come over later. At that point, Chicago was a bustling city, and there is a large Polish community in that area. Please email me when you get this so we can talk and piece this together.
Thanks Jay Piwnicki

Hallo Ronald, My father's line is Piwnicki from Prussia, Torun region. As your ancestors! After the 2nd world war its difficult to find the roots of them but I found a lot. Perhaps we can exchange our lines? For example, I've found a Stephan Piwnicki who went from Hamburg with ship to N.Y, America . But for the exact date I have to watch the papers, and they are at home. So if you are interested write me. Regards Cordula Moeller

Re: In Search Of Piwnicki
Hi Jay, I found your message to Ronald. There are a lot of Piwnicki's in our world. My father was one and he was born in Prussia, today Poland. I like to research for my ancestors and I found a lot of my ancestors back till 1805. And I found a Stephan Piwnicki who went at the end of 1890 to New York. He died in N.Y. about 1965. All found in internet. Are you interested in my family? Regards. Cordula Moeller

Hello Cordula:
Thank you for your response. I am most excited to know of your information. I do not have much information from Poland, but I am trying to find the link there. My family was supposed to come from Wloclawek, Dobrzyn Nad Wisla, and Maczewo. My grandfather's name was Wojciech Adalbertus Piwnicki who emigrated to US about 1900-1903. If you have information in any electronic form, I would love to see it. I can help you with the Piwnicki family in US and also with Piwnicki in Poland from another family source there from Pieniezno. I can't wait to hear from you. Thank you.

Hi Ronald, which confession had had your grandfather? That's important for finding their names in the churchbooks. Did your grandfather come exactly from Wloclawek, Poland, or was it only a small village near by? All you know is important for finding it. In Germany I'm in a special mailing list for search ancestors in Poland. And they could perhaps help more. Also try it with www.familysearch.com - I learned a lot about the search of ancestors.

Hallo Ronald, some more: the name Piwnicki comes from a small village called Piwnice near the town Gollub. The family is from noble birth and there are a polish family and a prussian family from noble birth. All written in the archive of Thorun/Thorn. And in the German 'Gotha', a noble dictionary. There were several wars between Poland and Prussia . You need the history background for understanding, sometimes Piwnicki's were polish, sometimes they were german. Regards. Cordula

I was surprised to see the name Piwnicki. My family name is Puneky. Could it be the same, just spelled differently. I know that Louis Kossuth Puneky was born in 1861 in New Orleans to John Puneky and Maria Heinrich. The family story is that some earlier generation had to leave Hungary? because of a change in power. He went to Brazil and then later to New Orleans. I'v never seen the name except for our relatives. Do you think that it could be the same? Thanks.

Dear Carolyn, I suppuse, your family has nothing to do with the 'Piwnicki's'. The Piwnicki family comes from Poland, former Germany-Westprussia. Your Prunaky' s are from Hungary! I'm sorry for you. Regards from Germany, Cordula Moeller

Re: In Search Of .Piwnicki..
Have just received information from my researcher in Poland and I have Piwnicki name in my family line.
Example: Walenty's father's marriage in Mlodojewo: Feb. 5, 1832 Andrzej Borczykowski age 29, born and resided in Marcewo, single son of both late Stanislaw and Marianna nee Piwnicki Barczykowski Got married to Wiktoria Opielinska, single age 24, born and resided in Marcewo house #9, daughter of Late Tomasz Opielinski and Justyna nee Smolkowska of Marcewo. Witnesses: Mateusz Wikotowski, Ignacy Etykraft, Entry #3/1832
Also, there was an Antoni Piwnicki (uncle of Mikolaj) age 61 witness to Mikolaj Borczykowski's wedding.
Also, recorded a death of mother of Andrzej and Mikolaj Borczykowskis March 15, 1810 in Marcewo Poland: Maryanna nee Piwnicka Szymczak, spouse of Walenty Szymczak, after first marriage Borczykowska, died at the age of 28 in Marcewo house #14. Witnesses: Wojciech Piwnicki age 70 father of the deceased and lease holder from Marcewko.
Also from the researcher "The Piwnicki family" They show up in the records. There are a few Piwnickis. Antoni age 61 in 1828 is Mikolaj Borczykowskis uncle, Wojciech Piwniczki father of Maryanna age 70 in 1810. He probably died in years when there are gaps - after 1810. Later this is a death of a widow, probably his spouse: Krystyna Piwnicka, widow age 90 died in Marcewek House #6. she died and was buried on January 19, 1823. Another record, maybe more possible to be a family member and another location: Jacenty Piwnicki died in Marcewko at the age of 52. He was single, resided in Marcewko, died on Dec. 27, 1828 and was buried the next day. Witnesses: Jan Bergier, Jakub Witecki Entry #34/1828
