obit & Civil War info for Elijah Severe Pitner, 1842-1917

Glasco Sun, Jan. 4, 1917, page 1:
Elijah Severe Pitner was born in Union county, Georgia, October 1, 1842, and died at his home in Glasco, Kansas, January 1, 1917, age 74 years and 3 months.
In his childhood he removed with his parents to Lumpkin county, Ga., where he spent his youth and young manhood. In his nineteenth year he enlisted in the 52nd Georgia volunteer regiment for service in the Confederate army, in which, until the close of the war, he served faithfully the cause he thought was right. He was the last surviving Confederate soldier of this vicinity.
At the close of his active service in the war, he returned home and was united in marriage September 4, 1864, to Martha Simmons. To this union was born five children: Mrs. Sallie Pierce, deceased; S.J. and W.E. Pitner of Glasco, Kansas; Mrs. Bessie Gill of Rice, Kansas; James M. Pitner of Washington, Ga. He also raised two orphaned granddaughters, Dora and Dulcye Pierce. His four surviving children and eight grandchildren sincerely mourn for him.
He came to Kansas in March 1887, and has resided in Cloud county for twenty-six years. His wife died October 20, 1911, after which he moved to Glasco and has since resided at this place.
In early manhood he joined the Baptist church, and while not identified with any church at this place, he has of late attended the M.E. church here and was the charter Senior member of the Junior League and a general favorite of a host of children whose friend and counselor he was.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Masonic orders here, and leaves many kind friends to regret his death.
Funeral services were held in the M.E. church, after which he was laid to rest in the Glasco cemetery under the auspices of the Odd Fellow order.

(on the same page)
War Memoirs of E.S. Pitner
E.S. Pitner was born in Union county, Ga., October 1, 1842. He enlisted at Dahlonega, Ga., March 4, 1862, in Company D, 52nd regiment, Georgia Infantry, and served under Gen. Kirby Smith in his campaign in Kentucky and Tennessee. He participated in battles Cumberland Gap, Craborchard, Knoxville to Murfreesboro, Tenn. From there he was sent to Vicksburg, Miss., to defend this stronghold from the attack by Gen. Grant's forces.
He was in the battles of Kenesaw, Bayon and Baker's Creek or Champion Hills in near of Vicksburg at which place he was made a prisoner of war. After Gen. Grant's forces made an investment of Vicksburg and established a base at Hafnes Bluff on the Yazoo River, he with some three thousand other prisoners were placed on boats and taken to Cairo, Ill., then by railroad to Indiana, and confined at the fair grounds. Here he met many Indiana soldiers that he had helped capture at Cumberland Gap, who had been paroled and sent home. After remaining there about five days they were sent by rail via Pittsburg, Pa., to Delaware Bay, and in July, 1863, were exchanged at City Point, Va., and he returned to the service at Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and the campaign in the vicinity of Athens, Ga., under Gen. Longstreet. Went into winter quarters at Dalton, Ga.
In the spring of 1864 he fought almost every day in the Atlanta campaign under Gen. Hood, his first battle being at Peach Tree and West End, falling back from Atlanta to Newton, thence back toward Nashville, which place they failed to reach, having fought battles at Columbus, Tenn., again near Nashville, which was the last Battle he was in, Sherman having passed them for the sea. Gen Lee surrendered his army, Gen. Johnson soon did likewise, and he returned home, was married and settled down until the spring of 1877, when he went to California, returning in the fall of 1878 to Georgia, and in 1887 moved to Kansas where he died Jan. 1, 1917.
W.W. Ohio. Rev Henthorne's wife was a Pitner. George and Mary had a daughter, Grace Pitner. Please note there were two George W.
Marty,

You mention that your Pitner branch ended up in Tennessee. Do you have a Becca (Rebecca) Ann Pitner in any of your files? I have hit a brick wall on this one. I can go as far back as my 2nd great grandfahter who James Pitner who married Ellen Thomas. Family lore has it that James was born out of wedlock to Becca Ann. I can find to nothing to prove or disprove this theory. The only record of Becca Ann I can find is that of her marriage to John Baker in 1865.
D L & Maude Pitner early 1900s

For some time, I have been searching for this couple, who apparently were living in Birmingham, AL, in 1903. The wife is Maude Diffenderfer Pitner, born ca. 1874 in Pennsylvania, most likely near Lewisburg or New Columbia. Maude was reared in Albion, Nebraska, then her family moved to Highlands, NC, and Tallapoosa, Georgia, ca. 1890. Sorry, I do not know what D L stands for. All I have on Maude as an adult is a 1903 letter from a lawyer settling her mother's estate, which lists her as Mrs. D. L. Pitner of Birmingham, AL. The Birmingham Public Library does not have them in the 1904 or 1902 city directories, and the 1903 city directory is missing. Would appreciate any clues.

I can't seem to find this Anna anywhere. I came across the following though.

John Pitner (Son of Hendry) and Jemima Davis

Children:
Sarah May b. 5/17/1787 d. 9/9/1809 yellow fever
James Neely b. 9/22/1788 d. abt 1842
Deborah b. 6/19/1790 d. 4/5/1879
Mary b. 5/30/1792 d. ?
Anna b. 1/11/1794 d. 12/14/1836
John b. 10/19/1806 d. 10/15/1823
William b. 10/22/1798 d. 4/10/1833
Eliza N. b. 7/12/1802 d. aft. 1885

This information and more is available on Google books, in "History of Bucks Co, PA" by William Watts Hart. It was published in 1905. Would be interested in a copy of the microfilm of Michaels death. I have the Pitner family history by levi Pitner and also one by Franklin Pitner plus other related items. I have not done any work on the family history for a while, but hope I can be of help to you also. You probably already have the histories I have mentioned as most descendants do. Terri Williams has a great site if you are interested. Hopefully we can share some information.
Sharon Noble

Trying to learn about my Aunt Sue who married a man named John Pitner (I think) about 1960. I may be off a couple of years. She was from Tennesee and her previous name was Rogers or Rodgers. The spelling is unknown. Her maiden name is Mason. If you have any information about this couple, we would really like to hear. We have been looking for about 15 years with no luck. Thank you for your time and energy.

Rhonda, my ancestor, John Pitner, lived in Pennsylvania in the early-mid 1700s. There seem to have been two John Pitners in PA at that time -- 1) the son of Lambert Pitner and 2) my John's family. I have never been able to pinpoint his parents or where he came from. The will of Elizabeth Pitner Maxey (widow of Edward Maxey) stated John's wife was Barbary Ricker, of Philadelhia. Later this John and Barbary Pitner deeded land to John Nave in Virginia. We know that John and Bargary Pitner had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Edward Maxey. After their stay in Virginia all of my Pitners moved south to Tennessee and Georgia.

I'm sorry that I don't know a Cusick connection for you. Wish I could help you.

Marty Dickson
Hi Keith,
Thanks for the reply. Actually, I was just hoping there even was a Pitner-Cusick connection somewhere. In short, back in the early 1800's, one of my father's male ancestors (an Osmun) married a Pitner. This occured in Pennsylvania. Years later, my grandfather was born, also in Pennsylvania, and was named Albert Cusick Osmun. Now it occured to me that in tracing the Osmun name back to the 1700's, I never came across a Cusick. So, my working theory is that the Pitner relative must have been related to a Cusick somewhere along the line in order for my grandfather to inherit the name. Do any of your Pitners some from Pennsylvania? My working theory isn't much to go on, but I'd sure be interested in knowing where your grandfather and his line are all from.
Rhonda

Hello,

What Pitner branch are looking at. My grandfather was John Cusick Pitner. To date I have not found out why the middle name was Cusick other then some relatives telling me that they thought there was a Cusick relative. Unfortunately I have not been able to trace the Pitner line past my 3rd third great grandmother Becca Ann Pitner. Family lore has it that Becca had James Pitner out of wedlock however I have not found anything to substansiate that claim. The line goes:

Becca Ann Pitner
James Pitner
William Howard Pitner
John Pitner
Bill Pitner (my father)
Keith Pitner ( me)

Keith
I recently found pictures of the still standing "The Pitner House" in Newtown, PA. The pic's came from the Historic American Building Survey. The details stated it was built around 1780, but litle other detials were available. I understand that a John Pitner was born at near by Penns Manor in 1755 to Hendrey and Deborah Pitner, But I can't find any other details about these families other than the 1790 and later census. Any help on these families or the home would be helpful. If you want the Pitner home pictures I can post the link. Let me know.

Michael in your researching have you found or have listed an Anthony and or Mae Pitner (aka Yetter)? That may have lived in Santa Rosa,California in or around the time listed in Maureen's postings? I have called my Aunt that would be the neice of this couple, she doesn't know of this name change or anything about the children of this couple. Anyway keep up the research.

I have done a narrow search on the Pitner's in my direct line. To date I have limited information that goes back to the late 1600's in Germany. However, I have not come accross the name Yettners in any of my research.

Maureen just checking to see if you have found any family info on the Yettners? Do you know why they would have changed their last name to Pitner and where did that name come from? Anthony Yettner was the brother to my Great Aunt Gertrude Kathryn Yettner Cannon. Let me hear back from you soon, thanks
