Am interested in your comment that your family lived at the Nunnery Farm Worcester. Family lore says that my family, the Callowhills lived at the Nunnery Farm. The family left England in 1886 and moved to New England where they continued the tradition of watercolor and ceramic painting. I have a copy of the catalog for the auction at which they sold the contents of the house. The address lists "The Nunnery", near Worcester. We had always been told it was "The Nunnery Farm". Could you tell me whether there were a number of farms with the same appelation?

It has also evolved into Peacher and Peecher. I just read a will from 1819 where it was noted that the recording clerk changed William Pitcher's name to Peacher. In my family, sometime in the mid 1800's that spelling evolved into Peecher.

The extended family from across the U.S. (Peachers, Peechers and Pitchers) has a gathering place on Facebook called Peecher's Place. Check it out and join us.

There are many more details in Bill Phipps book, but here are a few:
John Pitcher
b. 23 Sep 1688 Dorchester, MA
d. 10 Nov 1777 Milton, MA
Married first: Hannah Tucker 20 Jul 1721
Married second: Thankful Sumner 7 Oct 1773

His will was dated Dec 9, 1773...but not divided until after his death.....he willed his estate to the children of Andrew Kennedy, "of the Navy"..etc, etc. Bill's sources for this info were Grace Whipple's book, and "The History of Milton, MA by Albert Kendall Teele, and a Suffolk County Probate Court document.

Andrew Kennedy Jr
b. Oct 16, 1729 Boston, MA
d. May 10 1788 New Canaan, NY
Married Amy Wentworth Mar 1, 1753

From Registry of Deeds, Norfolk Co, Dedham, MA 1794. ...."transfer of shares", eights of property of the late John Pitcher of Milton, which he willed to children of Andrew Kennedy Jr, deceased.

I'm not sure, but there's perhaps a discrepancy regarding John Pitcher's will? One identifies Andrew "of the Navy" and the other Andrew Jr.
I think it would be worthwhile for you to get or find a copy of Bill's book as he goes into more detail regarding the people and happenings and gives his sources.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. Your information actually did give me two tidbits, Hannah's last name being Tucker... and the fact that Andrew's children were listed in Pitcher's will implies to me that perhaps Andrew died before Pitcher.

Thank you again...

I can't put my hands on Grace Wipple's "The Pitcher Family of Milton Ma", but I have "The Pitcher Book" by William R. Phipps Jr. (pub: Heritage Books, 2007). Bill Phipps did extensive research on the Pitchers and on pages 18, 40, 41 of his book he has entries related to Andrew Kennedy Jr., the adopted son (and only child) of John and Hannah (Tucker) Pitcher. Bill repeats, and expands a bit (with references) the same entry from the Wipple book that you've written. And Bill lists all of Andrew Kennedy's children since they inherited John Pitcher's estate. I think Bill's book is still available.

Perhaps to much time has passed... I am interested in the book mentioned, The Pitcher Family of Milton, Ma.

I am tracking my 9th great grandfather Andrew Kennedy Jr who was adopted by a John Pitcher sometime in the 1700s. The following is from the History of Milton.

" Andrew Kennedy, Jr., son of Capt. Andrew Kennedy, of
the Navy, was the adopted son of John Pitcher. He kept
tavern in Milton during the Revolutionary war. He and four of his sons were at the battle of Lexington. He married Amy Wentworth, 175o. The Kennedy place was owned in the first years of the town by John Pitcher ; a cellar, on the south side of the street in the fields, indicates the position of his slaves' quarters."

Any help? So far this is the only thing I have linking me to Andrew's birth or adoptive fathers.

Seeking information on Frances S. PITCHER, b. ME (possibly in Lincoln Co.) 30 Jul 1847/48. She was the daughter of Nathaniel & Hannah PITCHER. I have her in the 1850 and 1860 census, but then not until 1900, when she was married and had one child, no longer living. Would like to find a record of her marriage to Henry C. ROYCE and the birth of her child. Thanks.

I know that the English Census of the latter part of the century put down "Petcher" as a variant of Pitcher. May not help you I am afraid, but thought I would say it anyway.

I am trying to determine how the name "Pitcher" came into my family. My great-grandfather was Alfred Pitcher Hull (born 1829.) His father and grandfather were both named William Hull (grandfather from Ireland) and his grandmother was a Bowen, from Scotland. His mother was a Stone, from RI and/or NY state.
Does anyone have any of these names on record as being connected to the Pitchers?

There are two different Pitcher families in NL. One are the Pitcher's of the Burin Peninsula. This family started in the early 1800's and has no connection I can find to the rest of the Pitchers in NL. The other takes in the rest of the province and originated in Trinity Bay as early as 1617 and permanently from ca. 1753 onward. I am from the Trinity Bay line. I have several Donalds and James. Do you have any more information on Donald James Pitcher, maybe I can make a match-up?

Death of John Pitcher - 1900

Article from The Weekly Examiner, San Francisco, Thursday, 5 April 1900

MAN FOUND MURDERED

Jicarilla (New Mexico) March 29 - John Pitcher, a merchant a this place, was found dead today in his store with a bullet hole in his forehead. The condition of the body induced the belief that he was killed about twenty-four hours previous to finding the body. A sister of his died in Germany not long ago, leaving him considerable money, which doubtless accounts for the murder. Pitcher had accumulated considerable gold, which he had purchased from the placer miners here.

The murderers used every precaution to delay the discovery of the crime, putting sacks of flour in the windows of the store to prevent passers by from looking in. A blanket was also thrown over the corpse to conceal it.
I will look for some more info on Horace and Phebe (Burnett) Pitcher and I will let you know if I find anything. I did fine a book on Google Books on the Hannays - Genealogy of the Hannay Family - Andrew A. and Elizabeth (Wilsey) Hannay were Maris's parents (pg 12). Doug
