I am researching my Pisaniello family roots and am off to a good start. I know my Granfather Miguel Pisaniello came over from Cervinara and lived in Troy New York, his father was Palligrino or Pelligrino Pisaniello from Via Farrani PD Avellino, and my great great grandfather was Gennaro Pisaniello.
Miguel was maried to Madeline Grasso, Pelligrino was married to Maria Moscatiello, and Gennaro was married to Maria Magnotto.
Maria Moscatiello's parents were Luigi and Anna Magnotto.
That's as far as I can go. Anyone related or have information on these families?

I am wondering if there is a relationship between the Pisaniellos and the Pisanellis, which I think is my grandmothers maiden name. My grandmother came over from Naples, Italy around 1923. I'll check and make sure I have her maiden name correct.

There is a good likelihood that the Pisaniello's and Pisanielli are related because when they came over on the boat they had to tell customs what their name is and spell it out. Italian alphabet pronounciation is different than English and a letter or two may be accidentally changed. There is a famous painter by the name of Pisanello who I often wonder if he is related to Pisaniello. He painted in the 1600's I believe. I would consult the phone book in Italy to see if there are any Pisanielli listed.
For anyone looking at this message board, I found 378 listings for Pisaniello all over Italy. There are some in England, Germany, Switzerland and other countries.

My own family comes from Avellino and Cervinara. I am looking for information on Gennaro Pisaniello who married Maria Magnotto. He was father to Pelligrino Pisaniello, who was born in 1853.

Thanks!

Thanks for responding Lisa. By the way, how do you check phone directories from other countries? It seems as though you have done extensive research into this. I am basically, at this points, trying to trace all my parents' first cousins and their descendants. So far, I've located one cousin who lives in Argentina.

Lisa...I was down in Long Island visiting my grandmother today. She's in an extended care facility and is 96 years old. Anyway, I asked her what her maiden name was and she did say Pisaniello. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but I've been busy, not only with work, homeschooling, and family matters, but also I've found some interesting information about my father's side of the family (Garzilli) and have been communicating with a 2nd cousin from Argentina and a more distant relative from Italy. It's been very nteresting.
Relatively speaking, Pisaniello seems to be a more common name than my other Italian ancestors' last names. My grandmother is from Naples, and she has family still there. It seems as though in her family people were tailors and musicians. I have some info written down about her family. E-mail me directly if you're interested, OK? (brackzilli@juno.com) Sincerely, Laura

Lisa,

How is your ancestry search coming along? I need to look up the names of my grandmother's family in Naples and find out who's who. Perhaps your grandfather was related to my grandmother--perhaps not. It seems to be a fairly common name.

Take care,

Laura Ann Garzilli Bracken

Hi Laura,

It's going slow. I sent a letter to Avellino for my grandfather's certificates and I have not heard back. I did find a publication with the local history and supposedly the Pisaniello name but need to have it translated. How is your search going?
I have not looked into Naples area history yet. I have heard that the Pisaniello's fought in Naples in the Origone War but cannot verify same.

My research is intereesting, Lisa. I don't spend too much time on it for a number of reasons: time, money, and sitting-in-the-same-position-and-getting-very-stiff syndrome. But I have heard from a second cousin that my family knew when I was a little girl, and she doesn't live too far away. I've been in touch with a second-cousin once removed who lives in Argentina (very excitin, really) and woman in Italy who may be related, and a man who I think lives in Long Island. These are all Garzillis, who seem be more responsive to the message boards.
I need to find the information my grandmother (the Pisaniello in my family)gave me a few years back about her family in Italy. I met a couple of them when they came over to the U.S. sixteen years ago. My grandmother, who is 96 years old, (birth name: Josephine Pisaniello) was the oldest of six children, adn she used to tell me a great deal about her life in Italy and different events in her life. Now she is in an extended care facility in Long Island, and honestly shows many symptoms of forgetfulness, even to the point of having trouble recognising people. However, I can still ask her questions about her family; she can always refuse to answer them.
Thanks for sharing your information. Good Luck with your search. I'll be in touch again.

Sincerely,

Laura

I looked in Encyclopedia Britannica online regarding Naples history. It was not the Origone War it was the attempt to through off spanish rule in Naples under the Aragonese. I have heard that the Pisaniellos fought at the Castel Nuovo. The article I read said Alphonso V of Aragon was king of Naples. Prior to that time it was under the Angevin Dynasty.

Laura, Have you written for your grandmother's birth certificate? I have found sample letters and where to write at: italgen.com
I read that the marriage certificates have the most information on them.
BUONA FORTUNA!
