Hello out there. My grandmother's maiden name is Josephine Pisanelli from Naples, Italy. I am not aware of any relatives living here in the USA, but I could be wrong. Any distant cousins out there? Sincerely, LAGB

Probably not related My Grandma was a pisanelli by marriage.Name was Vincenza maiden name surname unknown but from Naples.Plenty of Pisanellis in phone book but name is rare (one in six million)

I think my grandxmother's maiden name is Pisaniello. At least, that is how she pronounced it last time I went to visit her. How is it that there is plenty in phone book but a rare name?

I WAS TOLD BY A GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY THAT THE NAME IS QUOTE-RARE. Only distinguished artisans of the City of Pisa were allowed to affix the prefix PISA to their name in the 1500s.PISANELLO was known as the Paul Revere of Italy then>A Metalsmith who designed their coins and an Artist also.Whole Art Book entitled Pisanello available in Libraries.

Name confusion and relation
David,
As I posted previously, the maiden name of my grandmother (who passed away just about three weeks ago) was Josephine Pisaniello. One of my aunts at one time said it was Pisanelli, which is why I posted a message here initially. Then, several months ago, when I visited my granmother, she said it was Pisaniello. ALso, my aunt recently showed me some kind of certificate with the name Pisaniello on it.
There are different variations of the name and I believe initially all the Pisaniellos, Pisanellis, etc. were from Pisa--is that not correct? Anyway, I'm curious--what information do you have about the other Jpsephine?

I just caught sight of your reply to my long ago reply! Anyway, as I said before, the name was definitely Pisaniello, not Pisanelli as I had originally heard. My grandmother passed away just three weeks ago. The day before I was fortunate enough to have been visiting her to say my farewells. Have any ideas about the various suffixes attached to Pisa? Laura
