Seek any information on my grandfather Salvatore Piraino who was born about 1878 and died in 1944. I believe his mother's name was Lucrezia. and he had a sister Catherine, possibly a sister Maria and a brother Joseph a barber. He was a shopkeeper in Brooklyn and lived on Troy Avenue in the 1930s. Sound familiar to anyone.?

Hello
Thank you for responding to my posting of Sept. 2000. I have since learned that my Piraino ancestors were living in Reggio Calabria before they emigrated to the United States. I knew that there was a town called Piraino in Sicily and I suppose if I were able to trace my family back further I might discover that they also came from the town of Piraino. Good luck in researching your family.

My great-grandfather is Santo Piraino of Syracuse, NY. He was born in Sicily, came to the U.S. when he was 13 years of age. His family left him in Sicily, due to illness, where he then worked on fishing boats. When he got here he worked a huckster, before opening a bowling alley on the south side of Syracuse. He had an arranged marriage to Francescia Lamacchia. The fathers knew each other from Sicily, and arranged this marriage. My mother has other names, but this is all the info I have right now.
