Researching my wife's family: Pietro Piraino (4-Feb-1862 - Feb-1929) emig from Belmonte, Palermo to Phila in 1901. He returned to Belmonte and brought his wife, Giuseppa Buttacavoli (abt 1881 - Jan-1919) to America in 1910.

My grandfather was from Belmonte Mezzagno and I think he had cousins of Piraino, Buttacavoli, Profeta. There was also D'Agostino's and Casella's. His name was Giacomo Ognibene, he settled in Philadelphia,PA in the 1900's. Sound familiar? Thanks, Joann

I just came across your message. I don't know if you are still active in your search and still check these messages. I am researching my grandfather's heritage as we are planning a trip to Sicily in June. My grandfather, Stefano Piraino, came to the US from Belmonte Mezzagno in March 1909 on the SS San Giovanni sailing from Palermo to NY. He eventually settled in the Philadelphia area, which is where we all live now. I am wondering if he may be related to your wife's family. I found six people with the name Pirano still living in Belmonte Mezzagno and am thinking about contacting them as it would mean a lot to our family to be able to see my grandfather's home when we are there.

Sorry, misspelled the name in my post. The people still living in Belmonte Mezzagno actually spell their name the same way - Piraino.

Hi, I think I found a connection. I believe Stefano's brother was Antonio who settled in Philadelphia. I believe they have a sister Vincenza. Their father was Sebastiano and I believe their mother was Angela Mazzola. Vincenza married Andrea Scafidi. Antonio married Giovanna Lorello. Does this sound familiar? Thanks, Joann

I have a Benedetto Paraine (also Peraina, and Paraino in documents) married to Giuseppa (DiPaola) in Belmonte and one of the daughters was Maria. Maria was married to Giovanni LaRosa also of Belmonte who's parents were Gugliclino and Angela (Buttacavoli) LaRosa. I found that even though Maria & Giovanni were married in Manhattan...Giovanni lived in PA in 1900.

Hi: This is interesting! Antonio Piraino was my paternal grandfather. His wife, Giovanna Lorello, was my paternal grandmother. His brother, Stefano, was my great uncle. If Sebastiano was my great grandfather and Angela Mazzola was my great grandmother and if they all came from Belmonte Mezzagno, then maybe Angela was related to Carlo Mazzola, who was my great uncle (by marriage to my maternal great aunt, whose maiden name was Margaret Italiano) Thanks for sharing this information! Tony
