William Haskel (sic) was a 6-year-old foster child in the household of Stillman and Laura Piper at the time of the 1850 census of Russell, Saint Lawrence County, New York. He was in the same household in 1860, age 17, using the name "William H. Piper." In August 1861 William enlisted in the Union Army, as discharged in July 1862 for "disability." A cryptic note in the War Department records indicated he "survived the war." At least one researcher has noted he died in 1862.

Some records indicate he re-enlisted in 1864, was wounded that same year and sent to a hospital. Other records say he died in 1906.

I have reason to believe that William Haskell Piper was a brother to my great-grandfather, John Haskell, and that he had siblings Maria Haskell/Rundell (Pierce), Catherine Haskell (Carlisle), and Emily J. Haskell (Cobb). There were at least 4 other siblings, names unknown. William, Maria, and Emily Haskell were living with foster families in Russell, NY at the time of the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Their father was William Haskell, their mother was unknown, although her name may have been Catherine. William Haskell (sr.) and wife were both from the British Isles, lived in Canada at least as early as 1837, and probably emigrated to Saint Lawrence County, NY in the 1840's. There seems to be no connection at all to the several "Haskell" families living in the area during that time in history in Saint Lawrence County.

Can anyone shed any light onto what really happened to William Haskell Piper? If he survived the war, did he continue life as William "Piper" or did he revert to his birth name, "Haskell?"

Thanks for any help.
