My grandfather Piper's father was Riley Granville Piper from the Sherbrooke area (Dixville)of Quebec and his father was Hosea Piper, married to Elizabeth Seymour in 1853. I can't seem to go any farther back. My grandfather Arthur(or Louis depending on what census you look at) ended up in VT where his children were born. He married Sadie Hall. I'd like to be able to connect with the Canada side of the family!

Re: Pipers in Quebec, Canada
Hosea Piper was my great-great-great grandfather. His daughter Lucretia, born in 1858, married a Cutler. Their grandson, my grandfather, was born in Dixville. Many of his children still live there. I have been recently trying to track down our family tree, unfortunately, like you, I have not been able to find any information on Hosea's parents or Elizabeth's parents. I do know that besides Lucretia and Riley Piper, there was another brother, Ozro Piper, who remained in Quebec.

Re: Pipers in Quebec, Canada
Thanks for responding! Last Thursday I stumbled across someone's tree who had taken the Pipers back to Magnus John Piper in 1510 in England (although his people came from Saxony(Germany now). Hosea was my great, great grandfather, and his son Riley (Lucretia's brother) was my great grandfather. Riley's son Arthur Lewis went to VT in the late 1890s and all his children were born there. Thus I'm a Vermonter via my Dad Glenn Walter. The trees that I've stumbled upon show Hosea's parents as Sherburne Piper and Naomi Hill. Sherburne was born in NH and for some reason went to Canada in the early 1800s. Sherburne's parents were Thomas IV and Permelia Clough. There are 4 Thomas's in a row, and then it's Nathaniel Piper who came to Ipswich, MA in 1653 from Dartmouth, England. He married Sarah Edwards in 1655 or 56 and they had 11 or 12 kids. Someone has indicated that all of the New England (at least) Pipers came from Nathaniel. Not sure all that research is correct because I didn't do it, but probably is. Anyway, we must be distant cousins! Hopefully I'll be able to go to Dixville within the next couple of years and look for family. Stay in touch!

Re: Pipers in Quebec, Canada
There were other New England Pipers in Quebec at the time. Judah Piper and his wife Mary were in Ormstown, near Montreal, with his son by a previous marriage, Jabez, and his wife Polly. At least three children were born there to the two families between the years 1804 and 1809. They were part of a group of Americans know as the American squatters. They all left at the outbreak of the war of 1812, having received word that Indians at Detroit, who hated Americans, were on their way to massacre the group. I believe most went to the Finger Lakes region of NY, settling around Wayne Co.

Re: Pipers in Quebec, Canada
I am looking for my Piper ancestors that lived in Wayne County, NY about 1815. Most went west to Michigan. Thanks for any data or suggestions on where to research. Carole
