General Pion history questions

Does anyone know the general background of this family? I have plenty of my genealogical info, but I would like to know the actual origins of the family, family name, history back in France, etc. Also, does anyone know what the whole "Pion dit LaFontaine" thing is about, and why so many Pions seem to interchange the two names? Even as recently as 1850 there are cousins in my line changing their last name to LaFontaine instead of Pion. What's that all about?

Thanks!
