Re: Where did Pimentel come from Spain or Portugal?
Generally, Pimentel is Portuguese and Pimental is Spanish but it isn't an absolute distinction. Lots of these names got altered when people immigrated so it's not too surprising that a few of the letters got mixed. Sometimes because there was no way to spell it correctly because English doesn't have all the symbols used on the Iberian peninsula, like the tilde used over the N in the name Pena.

Re: Pimentel come from Spain or Portugal?
I think that the name originally came for Spain and then Portugal. My husband's family came for the Azores which is part of Portugal. They are out in the middle of the ocean.

Re: Pimentel come from Spain or Portugal?
Well, first of all, hello my perhaps relative :D. My name is Duarte A. G. Pimentel and i can awnser that question : nowadays Pimentel exists more commonly as a Portuguese name but the first register of a Pimentel family was in Italy, as a renaissance merchant family. Hope it clarifies most of your doubts :)

Re: Pimentel come from Spain or Portugal?
HI Duarte. I'd love to know where you came by the info that the first register of the name was from Italy. The reason I ask is that family legend is that someone in the '50's paid the church to research the family history and it was learned that the name was originally of Jewish ancestry and was originally spelled Pimenthal, meaning "bearer of plams before God" or some such thing. The legend was that the original Pimentel's emmigrated from Italy to Spain to Portugal and finally the Azores to escape religious persecution (and possibly from some bad business dealings...). I never knew if that was a made up story or actually based in legitimate research. If you have any background on the renaissance merchant family connection, I'd be fascinated to learn about it. Thanks!
